is it all about the money?
by: discouraged pnmHow are cuts decided? I left yesterday feeling as though all of my parties went so well, only to find that almost all of the houses had cut me. I'm getting the feeling that bids are based more on appearance and money than on a girls' personality and ability to fit in and connect with other girls, and it's honestly discouraging. I can't help the fact that I don't come from a lot of money, but that's why I'm at A&M, to better myself and earn a degree so I can better provide for my family financially. I just want a group of girls who I can connect with and become close to, and I feel like I am not getting the same opportunity because my family is not wealthy. Sorry to rant.

My understanding is that there are 1500 girls going through rush this year. The cuts had to have been brutal. Try to hang in there and see if any of the houses you have left might be a good fit. You might be surprised. With the quality and amount of girls going through, I would think almost all houses are going to be good choices. Good luck and don't get discouraged!

Honestly, rush is a game. You have to be super bubbly, outgoing, and know how to keep a convo going or you're risking being cut. If you're super awkward, shy, quiet, and can't keep a convo going, people will cut you. We don't like talking to brick walls, we wanna get to know personalities. You can still have a chance in a house even if you don't know someone personally. It's really not about how much money you have, it's whether or not you are likeable or not. I don't even think I've looked at one girls outfit this week because I've been busy talking to their faces. Don't give up hope girl, there's still a chance you could love whatever you end up in!

Cuts are actually based on a super complex algorithm that would be impossible even for us to explain. It's all based on scores and y'all's rankings. Say a lot of those houses liked you but you cut them. Well poof you just cut yourself. Okay so say you really liked a house and they liked you, but your scoring afterward is average. You may fall below the cut line based solely on numbers, even if the girl u talked to did like you. Then bam you're cut again. We don't know anything about your financial background other than what area you come from. You'd be surprised how disappointing rush can be on both sides when sometimes a girl says she didn't cut us and her score seemed good but she doesn't come back. It all has to do with where you rank the houses versus where they rank you.

Each house is going from 1500 women at the beginning of the week down to 85ish on bid day...so only 5% of the women who walked through the front doors of ABC on Monday will be there tomorrow. House cuts & the PNM's rankings help whittle the numbers down from 1500 to quota. A lot of PNM's who don't already have friends in the houses or very involved alumnae pulling for them from the inside DO fall through the cracks, especially with the houses perceived to be top and middle tier. It's a numbers game to a certain extent.
Unless you specifically have made comments in the house about your financial status or expressed shock at how high dues are or concern about payment plans, I doubt your financial status had anything to so with your heavy cuts. The easy things to cut for are lack of recs and below average grades. And reputation. If you have all of those things going for you, it's more likely the invite lists were already full by the time they got down to your name (hence, falling through the cracks). It may mean that the house did want to invite you back, but not as much as some others.
Please don't withdraw today. Pref is often a game-changer and you may find yourself really connecting to the chapter(s) you have invitations to tonight. If you hate them tonight, withdraw, but realize your freshman year is your best shot at becoming a sorority woman. Sophomores re-rushing are usually not thrilled with their results and the successful sophomores are usually first timers.
