Some houses had harder cuts than others?

by: Pnm

It seems like some of the houses haven’t had many parties sisterhood round and I haven’t heard of very many girls with Tri delta or chi O left. Do some of the houses cut harder than others in the beginning?

Yes. Every house brings back a different number of girls based on their retention rates historically. Tridelt and chio usually seem to end up with fewest number of parties every round because they invite back fewer girls.

Okay, I thought so. So does that mean they also won’t cut as much for pref since they start out with less anyway?

The computer program is designed to help every house make quota so our Panhellenic system is strong. It uses historical return rates (% of PNM’s who want to come back the next round) to tell the chapters how many PNM’s they can invite back each round.

A chapter that is super popular might have to release 800 PNM’s after open house because historically 98% of PNM’s rank that house high, while another chapter might only be allowed to release 100 PNM’s because historically 50% of PNM’s rank the chapter high.

There are still big cuts before Pref for most houses because everyone invited to Pref must be on that chapter’s Bid List somewhere. Every girl at Pref could end up a sister so chapters REALLY spend time on the Pref invitation lists.

So will we get one of the two houses we submitted for pref?

If you maximize your options then yes, but we can’t guarantee you that you’ll get the houses you Pref back. But if u made it To Pref then your guarantee a bid if you maximize your options.

No, there is no guarantee you’ll get invited to any Pref parties.

But if are invited to Pref and you list all of your Pref parties on your Pref card, then you are guaranteed a bid to one of them. Even if you only have 1 Pref invite - if you fill out your Pref card, you are guaranteed to get a bid to that house.

I’m confused with what your saying above. I put on my card which 2 of my 4 remaining houses I wanted to be invited back for Pref. So your saying that I’m guaranteed a bid from the 2 that I wanted most?

I don’t understand the maximizing options. Please explain.

If you had 4 houses for sisterhood, then you ranked your preferences among those 4 houses, favorite to least. You could be invited back to pref to a maximum of 2 of those 4. It might be your bottom 2 choices. It all depends. If your 1 and 2 choices cut you but 3 and 4 do not then you will be given 3 and 4 for pref abd you will get a bid to 1 of those houses given you list them both- max your options- for pref. However if 2, 3 and 4 cut you but 1 does not, then you will receive a bid for 1 given you pref them and sign your card. If none of them cut you, you’ll go to 1 and 2 for pref, etc. Make sense?

That makes sense. Let’s say I get my #1 and #2 to Pref, can my #1 still cut me or do they have to offer a bid since I went to their pref?

U are guaranteed a bid but it might not be your #1. If u are not at the top of their list, u might get your #2, but u will get a bid to one of those 2 houses u went to on pref. Hope that makes sense

Sounds like the computer favors the houses that most girls don’t end up picking. I understand it’s to make all houses strong but that’s not really fair to the more liked houses and girls that go through rush who also like the more liked houses.

No because the most liked houses can still only x amount of new members so if we didn’t use the system that is in place rn more girls would get cut in pref and less girls would end up in houses

No, it doesn’t. Every effort in Bid Matching is made to place PNM’s with their #1 choice ->> 70-80% of PNM’s will get their #1 choices.

The difference now vs 20 years ago is that QA’s are now used. Before RFM, if both houses made quota before your name came up, you didn’t get a bid. No guarantee. It was called getting “cross cut” and it happened all the time.

Also before RFM, the chapters weren’t told how many PNM’s to cut every day. So Kappa, Tri Delt, XO, ZTA -
the big ones back then would carry tons of girls to sisterhood and then drop 80% of them the morning of Pref. Since pnms thought they were having a “perfect rush”, they had long dropped the lower & mid tier houses and would all of a sudden be left with nothing the morning of Pref. I can still hear the crying screams from my dorm room in the Commons :(

Or if you somehow kept getting invited back to the low tier houses, your bid was to AGD or Phi Mu (dating myself here - but both of whom had LITERALLY less than 10-15 new members in their last few pledge classes when quota was 65-75 range) because so many PNM’s would literally reject the bid.

So be freaking glad that even if you end up in a “low tier” chapter now….you’re starting with a gorgeous, talented pledge class of 50++ girls in a chapter that has a great national reputation - and a house!! Y’all would have cried like babies to see what the “Lower tier” houses were like in the 1990’s and early 2000’s….no houses, tiny budgets, members who were proud to be “anti-sorority girl”, etc.

Trust me, this process is SO MUCH BETTER! Not perfect, but soooo much better.

Here’s what Panhellenic doesn’t tell you…so before you feel depressed or rejected, don’t “trust” the process. Rush is not an opportunity to “shine” and show the top 6 that you’d be a great sister. If you don’t already know someone, you won’t get invited back. It’s nothing personal in most cases. You aren’t usually being rejected. It’s just that they already know who they want and who wants them. The ones who take back the fewest have most likely confirmed with the pnms where they want to end up and vice versa. No one tells you this secret side of rush. So, don’t take things personally. But also don’t trust the process, because you really aren’t rushing 6 of the sororities. They already know who they want and who wants them. That’s why their retention rates are statistically high. If you don’t like your options, you can always rush next year.
