Aggie Greek History

by: Ok

So I was talking to a Greek alum from A&M who told me some interesting history. She said the GPhi house used to be Alpha Gamma Delta and that the old Pi Kapp house where AOII is building used to be Alpha Phi!! That’s so crazy we had those chapters here. She couldn’t remember why they shut down, but she thinks it was due to low membership and that A Phi lost their house before they lost their charter. I asked her if she knew which house was the oldest. She said she knew DZ was the first actual sorority at A&M, but she thought maybe Tri Delt or Chi O had the oldest physical house. Anyway, she was a nice lady. She said she remembered when the DZ house had pink and green columns and that they got redone after a ZTA ran her car into the front of the house back in the late 80’s!!!

DZ is the oldest sorority, but the physical house is not the oldest. It’s up there in age though. Built in the early 80’s.

DZ is not the oldest sorority house. They may have come to TAMU first - but ChiO Kappa Theta APhi ADPi AGD - ALL built houses before them.

AXO came to TAMU uninvited and were not part of panhellenic for many years and had separate recruitment.

I think our physical house was built in 1983.

Chi O Kappa Theta Zeta APhi ADPi were the only chapters with houses when Athens Drive started and first recruitment in houses was August 1982. DZ DDD AGD had parties at Brazos Center and Alum houses.

Kappa is the oldest standing building, but was not a sorority house then. I believe DZ was the first house built to be a sorority house! Correct me if I’m wrong! That’s so funny about the columns

DZ was the first house built, and I thing ADPi and XO were next. Kappa’s was not built as a sorority house & was already there. DZ was the first sorority established in 1975 with their first recruitment in 1976. The house was built in 1978-79 I believe.

When DG first started, they held recruitment parties at the Brazos Center I believe. I think KD did too before their house was built.

All of the originals had apartments and had decided to not build houses. Then a few years after the originals chartered, Chi O announced they were building, so they were first to break ground and the others had no choice but to follow suit. I think ADPi and theta were next then aphi and agd but im not fully certain on that exact order.

DZ was not the first house built, it was Chi O. All the houses on Athens Drive were built first. Kappa House was designed and built by their house board. They are planning to tear it down and rebuild from what I have heard.

Why was this down voted? To answer OP’s question,

Alpha Phi lost their house, then rushed for a year or two from a lodge by The Tap and then folded due to low numbers. I think their last pledge class was 1998.

AGD also closed due to low numbers. Their last pledge class was either 1998 or 1999.

Neither sorority has a large alumnae base in Texas (and an even smaller bass 20+ years ago) so I think just struggled for a long time with not a lot of support.

I pledged Chi O at Texas A&M fall 1977. That was the 5th pledge class and the first year that only 1 rush was held. All 9 groups had chapter apartments at Sausalito for their meetings and generally the President
Soon after, all groups agreed to purchase land that became Athens Dr and Olympia Way. 1 group (Phi Mu or Alpha Phi?) used the existing residence, but the rest started building. Chi O was first new house to be completed and opened fall of 1979 and I lived there that year…watching others get built. Kappa, Theta, zeta, DZ, and ADPi all opened fall 1980. I am sure we held at least some of rush at the houses that fall.
Alpha Phi and Phi Mu closed their about 1980-81ish.
Who was the other group that closed III original 9?
Alpha Chi O started “illegally” around 1981 and TriDelt and PiPhi right after I graduated.
