recruitment
by: pnmmommaMy daughter so very much wanted to be in a sorority but coming from a humble background, we did not know about letters of references or anything so she went on her own without anything. She transferred from a school that did not have sororities and was so very much wanting to be Greek at A&M. She met a lot of friends and had a nice time, but was cut each day by the ones she liked and had to drop completely on Friday before bid day Saturday. Sadly, because she is already a sophomore, this is it. For anyone reading this, we found out too late that you have to have letters of recommendation and/or be a legacy if you want to go Greek at A&M. Otherwise, don't go through rush thinking you will get a bid, just go to make new friends and have friends who are not Greek because if you show up without your rec letters, you won't get in.My daughter so very much wanted to be in a sorority but coming from a humble background, we did not know about letters of references or anything so she went on her own without anything. not to judge this mom too hard, if she wasn't Greek herself, she doesn't understand how Rush works. The sororities do the picking even though they "say" it's mutual selection. PNMs and their parents don't really understand that they don't have a say in the matter.
The best thing your daughter can do is sign up for COB. If she is a Sophmore, this is her last chance to be Greek and if doesn't take it, she'll be missing out on a once in a lifetime experience.

I know many girls went through this year making it even more competitive, but I did recruitment last year as a sophomore with only one rec letter (not to the house I got) and got my number one choice. I know this year my chapter took a ton of sophomores, so that is not the case. It really just depends on what the chapters are looking for.

This is NOT the site to get real info on Greek Life. If this was your 'source' it explains quite a bit. Try greekchat for better info. This is pretty much a bashing site - people read for amusement, just to see what is being said. No ownership of comments, no proof of membership nor even if you're a current student. You obviously did not get the best advice, nor understanding of the process although there is plenty of info. available.

I am sorry that recruitment didn't work out for your daughter this semester; we found out that it can be a tricky process if you're not familiar with all of the details! However, the Greek Life Office on campus at Texas A&M is staffed with wonderful people who know what they are doing and are very understanding and most helpful. I also work on campus and have a position that allows me to occasionally interact with sorority members, and that gives me a chance to get to know some of them. I am confident that I know the sorority that invited her (by your description) because [she] "only had one sorority on her tag. It was the only one that she was not interested in, so she withdrew." Perhaps it was not her "humble background" but her inflexibility and attitude that did not result in any of the houses that she wanted. Seriously, by having her mind already made up, she may have missed the chance to know a group of awesome young women who want to make a difference in the world, who know the value of the education they are getting at Texas A&M, and have already travelled the world extensively. By the way, our daughter is in this chapter (as well as multiple other organizations on campus) and because of her "difference," (her sisters and friends know what I'm talking about) she has made a lasting impact on this chapter.

Dear pnmmomma, my daughter was in the same situation that your daughter was in but she didn't drop and joined the chapter I think you're talking about on here. So far she is really happy, loves all her new sisters and has a packed calendar of events for the rest of the semester. Maybe your daughter can do COB?

that A&M does a good job in TELLING ALL PNM's to get letters of recommendations. It's a lot of work and usually moms are the ones who do it. I'm surprised this mother didn't know that. It has nothing to do with "humble beginnings," because Panhellenic makes it clear. It's hurtful to send your daughter through rush with no recs. Sad.
