What's the situation with AOII? Do they have future plans to build a house? Have the started? I'm so curious about the steps it takes for colonizing a new sorority

From my experience there are several teams for a new colony including
Team 1 Extension/Recruitment -- you have get the right new members to even begin.
Team 2 Operations -- now that you have great new members you need to mentor them and insure they establish a program for success
Team 3 Housing -- have most likely been researching opportunities for over a year. Will have to decide if there is an existing property to renovate, or tear down and build all new, or consider an existing complex (townhomes/apartments). City regulations can slow decisions and even cause groups to abandon their original plans. Where they are in this process is not discussed as it can hinder negotiations, pricing, permits, etc.

They are close to the housing part! And honestly when they do get a house it's going to be new and absolutely gorgeous.

No public house plans as of yet. Even if they buy out the only frat house on sorority row they'll have to tear it all down and begin anew.

I haven't been too impressed with the colonization so far. They were the only group to present. No competition for them = no pressure for higher quality.

Yeah, they are pretty weak everywhere and overextending themselves on expansion. I'd probably pass and go through real recruitment next year rather than end up in the sorority with all the PNMs everyone rejected and without a house.

I was told they competed with alpha phi to colonize at tamu.

No Alpha Phi presentation. I wish AOPi well, but they have no presence in Texas. I also thing they are expanding quickly and kind of randomly. I have my fingers crossed and wish them the best, but it is a curious choice.

AOII was the ONLY sorority to submit for expansion when the invitation was opened. Panhellenic thought they were going to whittle the list down to 3 to invite to present and only had 1 application. That should tell you something.

So if there aren't any solid plans for building a house, it makes me wonder what kind of dues these new members will be paying. Sounds to me like they'll be paying on a house they'll never get to see or use before they graduate. I'd think twice about joining for this exact reason.

Your founders of your sorority didn't think that way. They had vision for something greater than just themselves.

The new colony dues will mostly pay for events, parties, online chapter stuff, recruitment, etc. -- like all other sororites here. And all chapter have house funds. Even if you are a colony there are meeting venue fees.

Housing options for sororities can move along rather swiftly. Nationals know it's important for new chapter growth.

Good luck to the AOIi ladies!

That's why I'm still not sure if I want to join. I feel greedy being like that, but if I joined a sorority I'd want the full experience and al the things it has to offer, like hanging with all my friends in the house etc. but I mean it could still be fun. I'm just imagining having meetings in the msc and Idk that just feels like every other student organization on campus.

Just about every sorority here got a new house almost immediately upon colonizing at A&M. The sororities that colonize at other SEC schools show their house plans because they know that they need to to be competitive.

Usually nationals and alums donate money for a new house. But I honestly don't know any AOPi alums in Texas. I pitied all my SEC friends who had to run around getting rec letters for them.

Joining AOPi is going to be like joining Maggies or some other spirit group. Honestly, AOPi should probably try to absorb Maggies or something if they want any hope of retaining quality members.

@Questioning, if you only wish to join if they own a house or equivalent -- then ask them now during their interviews for new members what specific housing and meeting plans are in place for 2017 and beyond.

@Hmmmm, just because someone posts there are no public plans for a house does not mean there are not plans for a house. Publicizing can hurt real estate negotiations if property sellers know a sorority wants a certain piece of land. There are other reasons too. Don't spread false information.

Lol false information? Anyone with half a brain can read to tell that's my opinion based on current perceptions. I've never presented as facts. "Publicizing can hurt real estate negotiations..." Haha, stop kidding yourself. This isn't Walt Disney In the 60's trying to buy land in Orlando. They're going to have to disclose who they are well before closing on a property. It's no secret they need a house, so just chill out.

they agreed to have a house within 5 years of colonizing. so with 1 year down, that means they should have a house in the next 4 years though

Where are they going to rush out of during recruitment? They're listed under the sororities in the recruitment guidebook and they didn't include maps and pictures of houses this year unllike the previous years.

They will have a tent next to one of the houses during recruitment

Okay, I honest to god am not trying to start something, but what were they thinking to have their recruitment in a tent in 100 degree heat when everyone else has a nice, big air conditioned house? Like, wouldn't it be better to save the time and money and keep holding informal recruitment? I don't think the tent is going to endear them to any PNMs because it puts what they're lacking in such stark contrast. And if they're taking part in formal, does that mean all quota is going to go down and PNMs will be forced into AOPi? You're going to see so many drop and tons are going to be really resentful.

They are having a tent in The frat house's parking lot. That just doesn't seem like a good idea but we shall see. You can only air condition a tent so much and make it look good.

Just curious... Where would you recommend they hold their recruitment?

What I think is funny is that all of you are talking about AOPi like you are members or their HQ and know everything about them... We were all new chapters at one point and wouldn't be where we are today with out the support of one another. I'm sure AOPi is going to do everything they can to have a successful formal recruitment.
