cutting process

by:

There are ALOT of girls that come through and I'm sure the actives are meeting how do they chose to cut girls? I have a good gpa and I'm not awkward to talk to but being memorable is nearly impossible with so many qualified girls... How do I stand out? And how are the actives making picks

Just be yourself! Honestly, actives can tell when you're being real or not. Also, each sorority looks for something different. Don't go into recruitment with a certain idea or house in mind because if you get cut, you'll sabotage your chances with other great houses. Don't be nervous! Trust the process, honestly.

the first round of cuts is primarily for bad grades and not having recs, and the top tier houses will frequently cut girls that do not have connections in the house. after that, it's a lot more about your conversations during the parties and how well you click there.

I was cut by 8 houses after the first round. I was top 5 in my college prep school, legacy to three different sororities, well liked in high school, lots of awards and Always described as cute. I can not tell you how devastating it was to be cut by 8 houses (including legacy houses) day one, then by 3 more and by the end left with one house that I did not have anything in common. I dropped. It was so hard as my roommate and girls on my hall pledged. It has been a really rough year in this big school. I knew no one going through rush and have now found out this is how it works. have friends in several houses and am registered to rush. Still not sure if I can do this.

There is something seriously wrong. Are you sure that you were well-liked in high school? Because most, if not all sororities have a policy to invite back legacies. If it's a big school like Indiana University or the big SEC ones like Bama or Ole Miss then maybe legacies won't get an invite back if their GPA is super low. But the only reason a sorority would drop a legacy after first round would be if she got a really bad "no-rec" or if she had a super questionable reputation.

So it's either your high school reputation or your were super snooty and rude during 1st day parties. You seem like you're pretty full of yourself in your post, and we can definitely sense that when talking to you. To PNMs, I cannot stress enough how important it is to be humble and courteous to all sororities. We want interesting girls, yes, but no one wants a snob (except for maybe XO).

I think there were quite a few girls that got lost like you. It has gotten so competitive and houses often compete for the same girls. I knew quite of few who were the same. If you don't know anyone or come from a big city with strong Panhellenic you are at a loss. Chin up. Give it try again - nothing to loose.

okay, first off, just keep relaxed. I know the person above me sounded maybe a bit harsh, but it is a little telling that you look like the perfect PNM on paper, but obviously something did not turn out correctly. To be cut from 8 houses after Day 1 while having a good GPA AND being a legacy is pretty suspect. I know for my house, we HAVE to invite legacies back for Day 2 unless there are extenuating circumstances (meaning we have to have special permission from higher-ups). I think even in Tri Delta and Kappa legacies are guaranteed a second look. To PNMs reading this and freaking out, this is NOT typical. Usually, a typical PNM (not Blinn Team, clean reputation, decent convo skills) will have 2 or 3 houses on pref. They might not be the houses you want, but you usually will have options. RFM was specifically designed so that as many PNMs could see as many houses and have as many options on Pref as possible.

Now, I'm sorry that you feel as if you were lost after participating in rush, but I hope you joined other organizations and gained new experiences being at A&M! Greek Life can help, but the campus is still really big, and there are a lot of ways to get involved and make a difference. Have you asked yourself what could have gone wrong last year? Are you planning on changing anything this year or will you try to do the same thing as last year? Hoping that you have a successful recruitment this year!

I was a typical, pretty good PNM without connections and only had 1 house on pref night...it's a pretty good house, but it's really, really hard to come through without any connections. That being said, being cut by 8 houses the first round is pretty abnormal. You might not be as well liked as you think... I would say that for other PNMs without connections, you will probably get cut by about half or less (all the top houses) and then the real difficulty is finding a house you really like once all the "best" houses are gone.

You don't sound snobby you sound scared and confused by what happened. I think it's an absolute ton about connections. You may have been dropped by some houses because you were a legacy to others and they felt their chances to get you weren't high.

Keep your chin up and give it another try. Make sure you let houses know you really like them. Good luck.

It is such an emotional and exhausting week. Please don't drop because a house you liked cut you. Honestly, I ended up in my last choice, gave it a try and I'm soooo happy I did. I have met the most amazing girls and forever friends and it really made a HUGE school seem smaller. NO, you won't like every girl in every house, but you will find your group of friends and that makes it so much fun!. AND DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO THE GIRLS IN YOUR RECRUITMEMT GROUP!! This isn't HS and nobody really cares what you do. I would rather be a part of any sorority than be bitter and miss out on such an amazing experience.

Keep an open mind and enjoy the week

Avoid tent talk and keep an open mind. Sorority members can't divulge their release requirements, so just focus on the houses that don't cut you. They are the places that want you.
