mutual selection confusion
by: Curious
Hey guys
So I plan on rushing in the fall as a sophomore and I'm curious (more like frightened) to know if there is a possibility that a pnm is not asked back to any house. I would say I'm pretty solid on everything and not necessarily outstanding in any part of the resume. I honestly don't care about tiers if it's a house I feel like I belong. I guess I'm just worried something could happen and I don't get invited to pref night and I don't get a bid from any house. Any advice?
Thanks!

"Mutual selection" means that both the PNM and the sorority want to continue to get to know each other. After each round, you'll rank the houses you'd like to return to in order. At the same time, the chapters are making lists of PNM's they want to invite back. If you choose each other, you'll get an invite to the next round.
It is somewhat rare for a PNM to not get any party invitatations for the next round. Most PNM's who don't get a bid choose to drop out of rush because they don't like the options they have, not because they were cut completely.
You should only be worried about steep cuts IF you have a low GPA, no recs, a bad reputation, or if you're a junior or older. The majority of girls who go into rush open-minded and focused on finding a great sisterhood / home end up with a bid to one of our great houses! Please don't stress!!

it's mutual if you're a rockstar. i definitely knew girls who were "average" who had 1-2 party invites after the first round, but i also knew "average" girls who did a lot better. the best way to make yourself stand out is having great recs and having good conversations in the house. be bubbly and interesting, but also genuine

Don't let rush define you. It's an environment not everyone is comfortable in. Go with an open mind and confident in what you bring to the table. Be interested in the girls you meet and their houses. It will work out.
If you find for some reason it doesn't, consider rushing AOPi. That will be a different environment and maybe more suited to some girls personalities. It would be fun to be a founding member of something. Hard work, but fun.

Unless being yourself includes going to rush parties before or during recruitment.....then be somebody else because you will be judged for it....even though the actives all party the rest of the year. Just not in letters....LOL
