rush lingo?
by: BubblesI've been reading the recruitment tips and survival guides, but there are some words I don't really understand? What is suicide during pref night? And what are some more things to keep in mind so I can avoid the situation where I can be dropped during rush??

Pref night is the last round of rush before bid day. You will go back and rank the houses you have left. If you don't list ALL of the houses you were invited back to (you will only have a max of 3 by pref) then you have suicided. Girls do this bc they have their hearts set on a particular sorority and would rather drop than join another one. Suiciding means you can only possibly get a bid from the house you listed and if you don't you're out. However, if you maximize your options (put all the houses you have left) you are guaranteed a bid. And yes, that means that even if the house the girl loved didn't want her, so long as she is higher up on their list than another sororities, she will still get them. DO NOT SUICIDE. it is better to give yourself a fighting chance than suiciding. Just put the max # of houses and you have to get a bid from someone and it gives you a better chance at getting the house you wanted in the first place

If you maximize your options (aka rank EVERY house you go to on pref, regardless of if you liked all of them or not) and are given a bid from house XYZ (maybe its your least favorite house). You can either not accept your bid to XYZ then and there and drop out of recruitment completely or you can go to bid day (thereby accepting your bid to XYZ), and give it a chance. Remember, your membership in a house isn't permanent until after initiation, so you can always drop during your pledging period.
