i would say at least try because you never know what will happen, but be realistic about your expectations.

Is your 2.79 college or high school?

If high school, NO- do not rush. You're going to get cut everywhere because you won't be able to handle the time expectations of a sorority and pass your classes.

If college, MAYBE. A 2.79 is way below the all-sorority and all-womens GPAs, but if you have close friends in a lot of houses, all of your recs lined up, and an outstanding A&M resume (leadership, involvement, etc) you'll have a chance to get into maybe half the houses as a "grade risk." If you're drop-dead gorgeous, then you'll have a shot at more houses.

Are you a special snowflake? If you're in the same boat, the same advice applies.

If you're about to enter your Freshman year... how did you even get into A&M with a 2.79 GPA? If you are a Freshman, you'd be in the bottom 5th percentile of resumes we've received at our house so far... if that tells you anything...

If you're a Sophmore, then yes, your GPA is below the hard cutoff for many chapters here on campus. Expect to have only 2 or 3 options on your Day 2, even if you are drop dead gorgeous. I'm sorry if that's harsh news, but school is only going to get more difficult, and your GPA will most likely only go down, and that's not something houses want to risk.
