the truth about sororities

by:

Being in a sorority sucks and this is why.
No one likes being told what to do all the time. You have to go to this meeting, this event, delete your posts, etc.
You have to do so much stuff just to go to your own sorority events. Chapter is mandatory, get points, go spend money at other sororities events, or you can’t go to the semi/formal/grub for the sorority you already spend $$$$ to be in.
It is high school all over again. Everyone is so cliquey, it is almost impossible to make friends in your own sorority. Once they form a friend group, they won’t let you in. So better be the first one to make a group.
If you want to be involved in the sorority, for example, be on exec. Be prepared to drop your whole life. They expect you to devote your life to the sorority. Notice how everyone on exec is majoring in something easy like mass comm or education? It’s bc you either have to be stupid or be in a major easy enough that you can skip all your classes and still pass.
Everything ab rush is fake. They know who they want and who they don’t want before any of it starts. We are literally ranking you right now. Why do you think you get dropped for ice water before you even meet someone?
Have fun driving around, every week, for 30 mins looking for a parking spot for chapter. But don’t skip or you’ll get fined
No one cares what sorority you are in. If a girl asks what sorority you are in and you say KD, the next thing they’ll ask is “oh do you know ______”?!? None of it matters in the long run and it won’t change anyone’s opinion of you. After all, there are quite a few idiots in Chi O and they’re known for being the smart sorority

Real truth is there is a whole lot more to sorority life than formals/semis/grubs and if you don’t get that or if that’s all you want, sorority life is not for you and you won’t get much out of it. And that’s ok bc it’s not for everybody! You can save yourself a bunch of time and money and just go to Tigerland. It’s not Greek Life that’s the problem or that a particular house wasn’t the right “home”. Don’t get me wrong, the social events are fun - the high points. But I’ve also made genuine friendships at all the other things too by being involved and wanting to be there!

This exactly. If you chose your sorority because you got caught up in the idea of popularity/ranks, or wanting to be like girls you thought were "cool/pretty/hangs with the hottest guys", instead of girls you actually felt comfortable talking to and enjoyed being around then your experience won't get better.

No one in your sorority owes you their friendship and you might find you don't fit in. Sororities mid and lower down also tend to have better sisterhoods for PNMs who don't have strong connections because everyone is in the same boat so your chances of making friends are higher.

All sororities have similar events but different groups of girls offer you different experiences. It's flattering and exciting being offered invites to top sororities but it might not be what you needed.

When you accept a bid/invite ask yourself that if you fail to make friends is this an org you're still happy to rep and actually stand for. Plus you can make friends outside your chapters.

Oh trust me, I know it’s not all about social events. I wanted to be there in the beginning, then found out that it all sucked. I joined several committees in my first two years, and it never helped me make friends. It’s also harder to get involved when you’re in a difficult major and education is your priority. All the time you have to put into the sorority adds up, but exec doesn’t care bc they have no idea what it’s like (as I said they have the easiest majors).

@Everybody agrees: Popularity and ranks weren’t important to me when I was rushing. Neither was “hanging with the hottest guys.” I just wanted to be in a sorority with nice, welcoming girls, but obviously I didn’t get that. And I’m not in one of the top three

joining a sorority is what you make out of it. yes the actives should try as hard as they can to make your experience genuine and wonderful but when you go through recruitment and you pick your house, you are deciding how your four years will go. you have to put in work to get the rewards. if you didn’t expect to have to go to mandatory events and get points and actually have to be involved with your chapter then it sounds like you joined for the wrong reasons and it’s not a shock that you’re not enjoying it

and also when you have to “spend $$$$” to go to events it’s like $5 to go to a different chapters philanthropy event and I’m sure whatever chapter you were a part of accepted going to down the row events for the same category as the events that cost like $5 to go to. if you are mad that you can’t go to parties put on by your chapter without doing anything then reflect on yourself. if you genuinely tried your best and still feel unwelcome then I am sorry that the system failed you
