will rushing as a junior hurt my chances of getting a bid ? I'm a transfer from a community college but I really want to join a sorority. Also is it a common thing here?

Its not very common at all, its mostly freshmen with some sophomores sprinkled in, but its not unheard of. However, most sororities do aim to get freshmen and it is definitely harder to get in unless you know the right people.

Curious as to why spring rush would be considered an advantage even though it still later in the year

Don't listen to this person. The houses that will be spring rushing will be the same houses that would consider a junior during fall rush. So you may as well rush in the fall, and if it doesn't work out, try again in the spring. There's no guarantees for spring rush, whereas it's much easier to get a bid in fall if you maximize your options. Even if you're a junior. Spring should be a fallback.

I'd say do it. Who cares if you don't end up in a "top house". Every house in Greek Life is awesome.
