You do not need to go to parties or get in touch with people to join a fraternity during rush. If you know people that are in a fraternity on campus from high school or a family member, it doesn't hurt to get in touch with them and meet a few guys before rush. You will do just fine by not getting in touch with anyone early and just going to rush and being yourself and getting to know the people that rush you. Don't spend too much time bragging about yourself or how great you were in high school. Spend your time in rush discussing your interest and finding similarities with members of each house and being respectful to all. You don't want to burn any bridges even if you believe its a bottom tier house.

Also, I suggest looking into fraternity scholarships that at least 3 fraternities put on as a way to get in touch with potential new members that they can interview for small scholarships as a way for the actives and Potential New Members to get to know each other in a professional manor before rush. You typically get letters mailed to you for these scholarships after you sign up for Fall recruitment by early summer.
