Feel rejected by campus

by:

I feel like people see my letters before they see me. It doesn’t help that the second sentence out of someone’s mouth is asking what sorority you’re in. It’s like a hurdle I have to overcome to prove that I’m not weird. No one is outright mean to girls in less popular sororities that is true. But it’s more like snide comments or being left out or guys not talking to you at a party once they ask what sorority you’re in. It also sucks being invited to less because I feel like I have less of an opportunity to make friends with guys in frats so then when I do go to parties with my friends in other sororities I don’t have relationships with them already. This is why people think girls in low tier houses are awkward bc we didn’t have date nights and mixers to get to know people. Yea we can still meet people in clubs and class and dorms and people do but it’s just an extra barrier. I feel like I’m paying money to join a club that makes life harder for me. I have friends in my sorority and the stereotypes aren’t true but I could have made friends easier without the sorority. Part of Greek life is wanting to be social. Frats and other sororities don’t want to have events with us because they’re scared then they’ll be seen on the same level. Look at all the posts on here about which sororities had their formals with each other. If you get a bid to a low house drop. It won’t give you what you want if you care about a social life. People won’t be outright rude to you but you won’t feel included. It’s not a good way to start freshman year and I regret not dropping before initiation

if you had dropped, would you have re rushed or given up on Greek altogether?

I think I would have rerushed or done COB. I don’t think Greek life is inherently bad or that the people in other sororities or fraternities are purposely doing it. I think they just have their friends in their own groups so they don’t really notice what is happening. It’s harder being in a low tier one and I think it’s wrong for people on here to pretend that isn’t true

This really does sound like your own self has something to do with your perceived problem. You honestly sound like a glass half empty kind of person and are looking for the bad in every situation. Being in any sorority is not a magic bullet for how you are perceived by others, for better or worse; the way you present yourself isn't going to change with letters. Maybe look inward and be honest.

She will drop her sorority and nothing will change and then she will put the blame on her dropping.

It’s not that simple is there more she could do sure but the stereotypes people have toward different tiers do exist. I do think though that if someone meets you enough times then they’ll judge you just on you not your tier so put yourself out there more

This is mostly a freshman insecurity, on the part of both guys and girls. The older members in all the houses have met more people from all around and made friends with those they like and respect and have fun with, and have gotten way over the superficial/immature/insecure thing of what house someone's in or not being greek at all.
