competitiveness

I really wanna join greek life my freshman year since I am coming out of state and don't know anyone. I was wondering how competitive it is and if recommendations are crucial to getting a bid. I'm super excited to go to college and just want to have the best experience possible. I am also African American..don't know if that changes anything but yeah.
