Recruitment advice - srats
by: Ottogirl
This is based on my experience and the observations I've had on the other side of the process. Hope it helps!
Between now and the start of recruitment, do some practicing of what you'll say, how to keep up a conversation, how to look interested and engaged. TikTok and YouTube have plenty of examples. If this feels and seems fake to you, you're right, it is. But PNMs who prepare tend to do better than those who go in cold.
Please follow all srats on Instagram or none of them. It's bad form to only follow certain houses, and it could get you cut. :(
It helps if you know people in a srat but it's not a guarantee you will get a bid. More positive connections can increase your chances. But think of it as an advantage - not a guarantee.
All PNMs will get cut from one or more houses. Even houses where you had great conversations, and felt a connection, may drop you. This usually NOT because you didn't connect or that you weren't liked. It's because the system for cuts is basically a ranking system, and more selective houses fill up the number of spots for parties more quickly. They might've really wanted to bring you back but they filled up their list before they got to you. It happens to a lot of really great PNMs, especially for the most selective houses. Focus on the options you have and not those you don't.
Listen to your gut and don't share more than it's necessary with your rush group, roommates, and friends who are also going through recruitment. Where are you got back and where you didn't is your business. There's always someone who sounds like they're getting every single house back. Try to ignore other people's experiences and just focus on your own process.
If you have two houses for Pref it's likely you'll get your top choice but it's not a guarantee. You will get a bid somewhere if you rank both houses. It's up to you to decide if you could see yourself at one or both and make your choice accordingly.
This is what I've seen and experienced, however other people may have different observations.

ALLLLL of this. Also, don't be a b*tch to anyone. I repeat...ANYONE.
1) You may think you are ONLY 'top house material' and not want to 'waste your time.' So, you don't engage during conversations, roll your eyes or otherwise act rude in other chapters in hopes that they'll drop you. Don't.
2) You may quickly become convinced that you've 'found your dream home. So, you put on blinders and mention to other houses early on that you see yourself elsewhere or are in love with XYZ house. Don't. (IMO, don't even do this during pref.)
3) You may feel intimidated by certain chapters. So, you don't give convos there your best because you assume they don't want 'someone like you.' Don't.
Go into EVERY party open minded and kind to every single person with whom you interact. Every member and every other PNM is a human being worthy of your time, attention and respect throughout this process. Be confident and don't compare yourself to anyone! Nobody is better than anybody else. Nobody!
