Honestly it’s much less of an impact than you would think so don’t let posts on here scare you. If you fit in a house you’re probably gonna get in there anyways. Being a sophomore is only a slight disadvantage because if a house likes you and a freshman equally they’ll probably pick the freshman over you just because of the extra year they’ll be in the house
It’s a little isolating too because like 90% of your rush group will be freshman, but I would say take full advantage and still try to be friends with them. Also things like getting a big can be awkward but that’s down the line and not as big of a deal as you would think

I’d say the experience differs for everyone. If you have a lot of friends in houses, this can definitely help you, but nothing is ever guaranteed. I know people who had roommates/close friends in houses and didn’t get them back and there’s nothing you can do about it. I also recommend going in with an open mind, there are some houses that might surprise you that maybe weren’t on your radar. Most pnms are freshman, but if you truly put in the effort and make connections with a chapter, they are not gonna drop you just because you’re a sophomore. I love the house I’m in and going through recruitment as a sophomore was one of best decisions ever.

I agree with what both people above me said. I rushed as a freshman and got dropped from every house but one that I didn't want. I tried again as a sophomore and ended up with a full pref schedule that I liked and got a bid to my top house. I would suggest you think ahead of time your answer to "why didn't you rush last year?" because you'll probably get asked it. If you did rush and dropped out, you don't need to admit if you got cut..you could just say it didn't work out and you decided to focus on school or whatever. Nobody is judging you! And if you didn't rush, you could just say you wanted to focus on school and were busy with other things. The important thing is to never talk bad about the Greek system--even if your mind changed since last year. Just say you saw a lot of friends who are so happy and decided to check it out. Even if you aren't sure you even WANT a bid, it's best to really be enthusiastic b/c people who say they're on the fence will be the first to get cut (after grades and those who are definitely just not a fit).
