who is the most well known black fraternity
by: vertneri was just wondering what the SU community thinks about black greeks.
#1by: just one opinion
They don't know what the Greek system is about. Greek houses are SOCIAL organizations, not academic societies and not philanthropic societies (although those DO exist). It's for people who want to develop their character as well as enjoy all the social aspects of college. That means mixing with other Greek houses- interacting, competing and cooperating with each other. The Black and Latino houses tend to be really small and don't mix much if at all with the other houses. They win awards but don't look like they're enjoying Greek life. You can't self rank your way to happiness (hint alpha phi alpha)

I know many people who are black and latino greeks, and their organizations are far stronger than the more social organizations. They're pledging process is way harder and more conclusive. It takes months of serious dedication (most of which is being unable to speak to family or friends) to become a member. These brotherhoods and sisterhoods are visibly realer and stronger based on how exclusive and tight-knit they are and what they stand for. Maybe they would mix with other houses if those houses didn't give off a type of vibe. That's why they keep to themselves... and partially the purpose for their organizations.

First off, to the first person (just my opinion) please stop talking because to say that Greek life is a social organization and not academic and philanthropic just is that reason why people don't like Greek life. Not every person in the world has an interest in paying for an organization that is just a "social organization" and your statement downplays a lot about what Greek life is about.
ANYWAYS, SECOND, it's my opinion that I wish that black greeks/multi-cultural mingled more with the rest of Greek life. I personally feel that sometimes multicultural Greeks feel like they're better than the rest of Greek life because they don't mingle with us (just how it is perceived to me) and I know I would love to get to know that part of Greek life

Everyone just has to do better in terms of getting to know one another (Panhell, IFC, NPHC, NALFO, MGC). NPHC, NALFO, and MGC (Multicultural Greeks) tend to gravitate towards each other, because they just aren't many of us on the campus. Our organizations are social, but that's not the main focus of them. We focus on Scholarship, and the genuine bond of brother/sisterhood. And if you're on the outside looking in, you just won't get it. Most of you(Panhell and IFC) don't even try to get to know us, you judge just because we don't have "houses" and don't obsess over "rankings". Just because our processes may not be like yours, doesn't mean that y'all are necessarily better. Half of the concerts and parties that happen on campus are because of Black/Multicultural greeks . I personally feel that Black/Multicultural greeks put in more work, because we have to do twice as much just to get the same amount of attention that Panhell and IFC would.
But that's just me.
