What’s so bad about AZD’s philanthropy?

by:

Hey! Hope everyone’s having a good night. I’ll be a freshman and just wanted to know what the whole issue is with AZD’s philanthropy. Is it the way this specific chapter handles it? Is it because what causes autism is controversial? I’m sorry I’m just confused

No autism speaks as a whole is a disgusting org. It has nothing to do w how AZD cuse handles it. This org treats families w kids of autism is almost “victims” and like the kids are a burden because of the fact that they are austistic. They also see autism as something that needs a cure meanwhile people w autism are fine the way they are and are very intelligent. It’s the fact that AZD nationally raises money for this org that is sad

^This. They use tricky careful language to basically promote an ideology like eugenics is a main concern. They truly believe all levels of autistic individuals are inferior by nature and ruin the lives of their families forever

It’s not only the principle that’s flawed but the actual organization does little to nothing in providing funds to the people they supposedly represent and claim to want to help. The money they do utilize is way more focused on eradication and self advertisements

But if it’s really that bad of an org then AZD wouldn’t want to associate with them and fund their message right?

Again that’s the problem. AZD as an organization has done nothing to change the philanthropy or acknowledge that this is a bad organization. It’s sad too cause it’s not the girls fault but they do nothing abt it

omg don’t even get me started their philanthropy suxx for a million reasons! for starters, only 4% of what they raise actually goes towards helping children and families with autism while their CEO and board pockets the big bucks. there’s nobody with autism on their board either, no real representation of the people they claim to be for. please search up more info yourself. they don’t deserve ANY money

It IS very possible for a sorority to shift its international philanthropy. I'm a Gamma Phi Beta alum. We used to support camping. Now it is Girls on the Run. That happened at some point between the early 2000's and early 2010's. I am not super familiar with details, but I don't believe there were any "controversial" reasons for the shift, perhaps the supported organization went away or HQ just wanted to support a group that supported girls' physical AND mental/emotional health as GOTR does. This is NOT a judgement against AZD in any way, just an example that sororities CAN shift who they support.

That’s interesting. With DPhiE we technically have 3 different philanthropies that were at different times! None were controversial in our case either and also not trying to say we’re like better for having 3 lol but just giving an example of philanthropy changes being possible

@m I realize philanthropies can be a bit confusing so I’ll try to explain it. Gphi’s official philanthropy is “Building Strong Girls” yes but they have one official national philanthropic PARTNER which is “Girls on the Run.”

So “Building Strong Girls” is just the official name of their focus like how APhi’s is “Cardiac Care,” AXO’s is “Domestic Violence Awareness,” Tridelt’s is “Children’s Cancer,” etc—these are like templates for what area the sorority raises money for. So Gphi focuses on the physical and mental health of young underserved girls, Aphi focuses on all aspects of women’s heart health, Tri delt on all things childhood cancer related, etc. Meanwhile national philanthropic partners are external orgs and charities that srats may accomplish their philanthropy goals through. Gphi’s is Girls on the Run, Dphie partners with ANAD and CF Foundation (they also have their own educational foundation so that’s what people mean by three), Tri Delt partners with St Jude’s, etc.

Hope this helps!!!

autism speaks (axid’s philanthropy) legit tells families to go thru the 5 stages of grief as you would for a dead family member if you find out a family member has autism lmfaooo
