grades and involvement in chapters

by: Kelli H

I posted before, but I think my initial post did not get the point across. I am a freshman, chemical engineering major. I really, really want to join a sorority because I think that they are amazing places to make friends, gain networking skills and have a social life. However, after looking at social media I am concerned. As a chemical engineering major I will not have a 4.0, tbh, I am shooting for a 3.2. I also will have to study often and therefore, will not have the time to be involved in a million different things. I think it is SO awesome that a lot of chapter on this campus are crazy involved and have great GPAs, but I just can't do that. I know the pains of being a chemical engineering major as I was in a special STEM program in high school and I also know my limits. I just wanted to know if anyone thinks there is a chapter on this campus that is not PUSHING involvement and high GPAs like crazy that is still a reputable chapter? This website makes it seem like there are 6 really good chapters on this campus and the others are just not something special. I believe in making my own mind up, I just want to know is there a chapter I would be able to survive in that people don't "hate"? You don't even have to say which one, I just need to know that there is one or two maybe that I can be myself in and not have to worry about changing my major or my level of comfort to be active because I just am not seeing that!

Please help me. All these women in the top, likable chapter freaking rock and as much as I want to be them, I can't! I want to join a sorority to supplement my major and to have fun! I would love to be in a social house, but even their GPAs are so high! H

I've been a chemical engineering major since I began my time at UNL. I joined a sorority because I WANTED to be pushed academically and surrounded by inspiring women. Academics was my biggest seller when going through recruitment. This mind set you have will not fare well for you in recruitment or with this major. You need to always be ambitious. Do not settle for less from yourself just because you have a tough major. While I am not as involved as some of my sisters, or don't get as good of grades as some of my sisters, it does not mean I am not striving for higher for myself. You're talking about joining a sorority. The POINT is to be an influential woman. Some have required volunteer time, some require RSO involvement, most have GPA expectations. There are TONS of options for student organizations from within our own major to things like Guacamole Club. If involvement and excellence is scary and a kicker for you, you seem to be joining a sorority for the wrong reasons.

Don't rely on a website to tell you which houses to rush. When you go through recruitment you'll find a house where you belong and will encourage you to do well academically. You can be involved to whatever extent you want to be in a house but know you get out of the experience what you put into it. Don't look at this website any more than you already have because believe me no one but you will be able to find your fit.
