gpa too low???

by:

My non-weighted GPA finishing high school is a 2.496. I know I screwed up, really bad, but my ACT score is 27, and I am really worried about not getting into a sorority. I have lots of volunteer and leadership involvements on my application too. But the reason for it not being so high is for a very traumatic experience that happened early in my senior year. Should I talk to the sororities I like individually and explain my situation, or should I lie about my GPA? I really want to get into a sorority, and I'm worried I won't. I know I can bring my GPA up in college, but I need honesty, do I even have a chance? Thank you.

Your GPA is simply too low for most houses...

Thank you for your honesty, would it make a difference if I did talk to the president of the house and explained my situation?

Do NOT lie about your GPA! Grades are checked by Panhellenic and last year several people were caught lying. My best recommendation: Don't go through recruitment as a freshman because your options are going to be severely limited and you will get cut by most if not all chapters. DO spend your freshman year getting good grades, joining a few organizations and making friends in each of the sororities. Going through as a sophomore they will only look at your college grades.

Thank you for being honest, I never seriously considered lying, but I was panicking when I realized how slim my possibilities are. Do houses except sophomore rushes? Are they on the same track as the freshman, ex. Moving in after a year (so my junior year) ?

I had the same problem, except my gpa was a 3.3. I still got dropped from the majority of houses, and on day three of recruitment where you can have up to ten houses ask you back, I only got asked back by five. It hurt a lot, and I didn't make a connection with any of the remaining ones. I would wait until your gpa is more suitable. (3.5) is where they want you to be and then rush your sophomore year. I would also encourage you to look at open recruitment, and try going through that. I know a few sororities participated in that.

Are open recruitments more lenient with the grades than formal? And do you think if I talked to the sorority president it would help at all? Thank you for your honesty and taking the time to answer this, I'm sorry about your experience also :(

I really don't know how much more lenient sororities are during open recruitment. I would just go through it and if nothing comes out, maybe try again next year. There are plenty of amazing organizations at UNL that you can get involved in, and form lasting friendships through.

Absolutely contact and talk to as many sorority presidents or recruitment chairs as possible. You can do this by going to their websites and getting their names so you can friend them on Facebook. Once they accept your friend request send them a message explaining your situation. I'm really sure this will help.

This person is probably not in Greek life. Sorority girls are not allowed to communicate with PNMs via social media till after recruitment. Most mid tier to top tier chapters do not hold open recruitment.

Just a heads up, most sorority presidents and recruitment chairs won't talk to you via Facebook because it's technically illegal to have contact with a girl going through rush, espcially if it seems like they are giving you preferential treatment. You might have better luck emailing them, but don't count on it. Also, most houses either open rush pretty quickly after formal recruitment or immediately after winter break, you would have better luck with getting a bid second semester because then you would have a college GPA to use. Just a thought.

Actually most girls do not check their emails during the summer so by the time they do it will be too late. FB is a better method of contact because it is checked.
