fraternity dues

by:

What are average dues like for top tier fraternities on a semester basis? This is sort of an awkward question to ask brothers. My family can pay but I probably have to have the talk with my parents because they won't be willing to pay anything too extravagant. Also, how does the cost of the top on-campus fraternities compare with that of off-campus ones like Theos and Oz? I've heard they're saved from having to pay significant money to nationals, but they incur additional expenses that on-campus ones don't.

I have the same question. It seems like fraternities are very secretive about this, whereas sororities post them all online. Penn should step in here and do something about it.

At the top end you have A's which is around 2500/semester for out of house, more if you live in house (but that includes rent). At the lower end you have Phi which I think is like 750. Most others are in between and could be more or less depending on living in or out of the chapter house, or getting meals at the house.
I hope this helps, a lot of houses will help with dues if you don't have enough money, or have some kind of scholarship program to help you at.

Also national dues are not that much, and are included in those numbers.

Thanks a lot man! A's does seem to be on the pricier side. Would you happen to know how accurate that number is? Also, I'm surprised they're more expensive than Castle/Zetes, although I'll defer to your judgement since you probably know more.

Any idea how much rent would be if you lived in one of the chapter houses? Thanks again.

As far as I'm aware, I think A's dues are closer to 1500 than 2500.

Dues at top frats are usually a trade-off. The better a house is, usually the bigger their social budget is. On the other hand, the more traditional top on-campus houses (A's, Zete, Castle, Phi Delt, and also ZBT even though it's not "top") tend to also get a lot of donations from their alumni, which means they require less in dues.

Chapter house rents are the same as living in a single or double in the quad or high rise if you join an on campus frat. No clue about off campus, I would assume it would be more typical of off campus housing prices.
