don't fit in
by: pennI'm pledging a fraternity but I've come to realize that I'm not crazy about it and I don't really feel like I fit in. Should I drop and try to get by as an independent? Fyi I'm a sophomore so rushing next year isn't really an option

If you aren't crazy about it, you shouldn't do it. It's dues that your parents have to pay and ultimately these are people that you are going to be expected to interact with. It's not worth it if you're just in it for the letters. Being an independent is fine at Penn, and your pledge class will more than likely hang out with you still if you explain the situation to them. Plus pledging is a huge commitment and if you feel like you're not getting anything out of it, then you shouldn't feel compelled to stick with it.

Is it because of your pledge class or the frat you're pledging? Perhaps you just chose the wrong frat to pledge. I know a couple of guys from different frats that dropped pledgeship coz they realized they didn't fit in with either their pledge classes or their frats but ended up pledging my frat. Now they're my best friends.

drop and try again next year, if you don't fit in with the frat you'll go inactive or hate yourself later
