Racial component in GL

by:

I came to Penn with a lot of optimism for the social scene. But the more I went to events, I realized how homogeneous it is and I how little I am worth socially unless I am surrounded by white people— in short, it is unlikely that i will find a solid spot in relevant Greek life. It’s amazing how beautifully well white privlge works at this campus. I didn’t believe in it before Penn but now I see it with my own eyes. It’s insane. And one day you will be ashamed of yourself for reinforcing social discrimination.

its not really about race as much as it is about wealth. you may not have had the privileges of going to prep school or even a top notch public school, so navigating Penn might be more difficult. i am not white but i came from a upper middle class background, and i was blessed to not have social anxiety. if you are not at least upper middle class, or if you have social anxiety or both, then any Ivy social scene will be difficult. i def empathize with you- there is def a racial component when it comes to greek life esp at a school that is so statistically diverse as Penn- you would expect more from the frats and srats. but i think the race thing is just a proxy for the deeper issue of family economic status and high school background.

tldr race/religion matters at Penn, but if you are well off then it doesnt anymore

I mean the chestnut is just rich Chinese internationals spending thousands on rent a month… but most of the top frats don’t have Chinese internationals even though they’re clearly loaded.

Wealth plays a factor but so does race

There's some difficulty getting into top frats if you aren't well off, but even that's all dependent on your personality. Not all frats are Caslte tho, if you stop reading greekrank and actually meet them you'll see that most of the "lower tiers" are filled with a diverse group of normal people. I think SigEp and elmos are considered the most diverse ones, but frats like those are never going to be ranked high or talked about without money.

In a frat that’s fairly white and we’re constantly looking for POC to join. Keep rushing.

dude first off sorry you feel this way, i can def say i felt a little of this freshman fall. im not white, and its def not a race problem as much as a class issue. unfortunately most folks including myself are fairly well off and some of us (castle, apes, etc) think being wealthy is a personality trait. i personally dont but that might be the real core issue here at Penn. its still bad but its not hardcore racism.

a big part of the issue is that certain groups at Penn just dont want to break out of their boundaries and meet people who don't look like them. or worse, they want to be highly selective in meeting the people who dont look like them in order to maintain exclusivity.
