Inverse Relationship Between Tuition and Greek Life

by: Thoughts

With Penn tuition costing 70,000, it's difficult for some people to justify spending time drinking and partying with so much money on the line.
Imagine if tuition were free, i'm sure much more students would feel comfortable joining greek life.
I wonder how things will change as time goes on.

Is coming from a rich family a must for participating in T1/2 Greek life?

@Frosh you don't need to be rich but upper middle class yes...if you think 700k income is rich then you def will not fit in, most of Penn (forget just Greek Life) come from a background where parents are doctors, investment bankers, financial services execs, other execs or at the very least successful professors... these families all comfortably bring in 500k - 1mil every year... rich would be like the people whose parents bring in >1 mil a year... if you want to enjoy T1/T2 greek life you need to first get in and you can't really fake not being upper middle class

I disagree with @amy, it isn't a must but your going to have to somehow come up with money when you have to contribute when booking entire downtown clubs...

i think the main requirement above everything else is being a natural extrovert.. if you're the kind of person who likes alone time most of the week or can't party 2 nights in a row then maybe T1/T2 isn't for you... besides at Penn, greek life isn't everything

@Frosh being in a Frat is not just an investment, its also a recurring cost and depending on what frat you're in, the costs of being a contributing member can get really high

honestly i never felt like there's so much on the line on. most of us in greek life dont because we know how to balance the alcoholism and academics... dont mistaken partying for disinterest in our majors

i'll pick school over a banger 9 times out of 10 but i never usually let it get to that point... greek life honestly forces you to become better at time management.. there are a lot of people who still do badly with time, but 80-90% in GL do not
