We Need To Make This a Reality

by: Penn

Turning All Locust Traditional Frat houses (PDT, KS, Castle, Fiji, Crows) into Intellectual or Cultural Affinity Centers. Doesn't seem like a hard-to-achieve dream at all and 2020/2021 is the best year to do it. By no means should frats be disbanded, but rather make comparable space for organizations that are going to actually cater to American diversity

Imagine how much better locust walk would be and penn in general if castle was a the center for climate change research like it was before, A's was the center of health economics like it was before, and Kappa sig became a poli sci or engineering type place. Fiji too. It would be so much better.
Our student experience isn't enhanced by having frats on locust walk. Frats on pine and spruce, absolutely, but why locust, the center of campus?

i dont think we can turn these houses like KSig into research labs, those need more space and money... but we can definitely turn them into student community centers...... that would be so dope

Agreed big time. Frats should stay at Penn but leave Locust Walk. It’s legally very doable and the reasons not to do so are childlike.

Yeah. Why don’t we make penn a dry campus too...maybe also turn the liquor stores into research centers. I’m sure lot of kids are dying to have fun 2 miles away from campus

if you don't want your on-campus homes to be replaced by minority cultural centers or intellectual programs, I totally get it but then you need to be able to have an adult conversation with the rest of Penn (particularly leaders of minority cultural groups) about both racial and income diversity and explain why they should/shouldnt be okay with just a portion of a basement for their respective communities

Personally, I think PoC in general are eager to speak with frats about this topic, bc it really does have an impact on our experience at Penn.

I’m a minority myself and think that turning houses into cultural centers becomes exclusionary in itself. Anyone from any culture can join frats. This isn’t the case for cultural groups. While some frats like as and phi delt are significantly worse than others, for the vast majority of houses their diversity is reflective of that on campus. At the end of the day everyone here is making assumptions that every frat is >70% white which isn’t true

Legally this is impossible considering As and skulls own their house. Castle and Phidelt legally have the right to use their house (contract they made penn sign when they sold it), and idk but the others but I’m sure agreements r similar.

Like I get ur wanting to do this but you have to respect the legal autonomy of these organizations. They don’t have to do anything no matter how much it would ‘benefit’ the community. And expecting them to give up their house for someone else’s ideals is plain dumb.

actually there is legal precedent from various other schools including those in Pennsylvania to allow for it... BUT I do agree that no one should have to give up their house before there is a proper 2 sided conversation regarding the topic

Penn can at anytime choose to terminate a frat's right to live on Locust- but if they do so they must allow them a chance to come back after a few years or risk having to permanently buy back those properties from the national organizations which actually is a not-so-complicated option and has been done in the past at Penn

i guess the situation is complicated with Hall like you said but for all the others, Penn can more or less easily buy those properties back if they have a serious plan to refurbish them into academic or community buildings
