Hypocrisy on Race and Segregation

by: Cmon now

Frats/Srats: From the bottom of our hearts, we condemn racial discrimination

Also Frats/Srats: yeah we take tokens every other year and don’t really mix with the other gender if they aren’t white. Also we don’t really make any serious attempts to learn about other people’s cultures.

condemnations are just "trendy" formalities... they don't mean anything, can't believe my first reply was deleted by some insecure child

Condemning racism is like condemning cancer. Everyone knows racism is bad; publicly condemning it doesn't do much. Turning words into action not just when it's a trend, but long-term is how we can make a change. We have to continue to stand with black communities when the media/social spotlight isn't on us.

What you're talking about is a different discussion. If you want to diversify your social circles, go ahead and do it, but the issues facing POC today aren't that they can't hang out with white people, it's systems set in place that make them more likely to be incarcerated, impoverished, sick, and killed by police.

I'd also discourage going out of your way to befriend someone just because they're POC....

@Yeah i didn't imply that you befriend someone just because they are not white... also importantly im saying instead of feeling white savior syndrome and making that known to the world every day of your life, go out of your way and learn about other people's cultures... it can be incredibly humbling to learn about the achievements and rich contributions non-Eurocentric cultures have made to the world beyond just yoga, math and jazz. having this perspective will bring humility and deeper understanding of the globalized world we live in. because otherwise you will always come from a point of white saviority and only come off "Trendy" even when you mean well

@Yeah... i do think there is a fear of the unknown when people meet others who don't look like them (probably evolutionary), which is why so many white students at Penn only learn about system racial issues from a "distance"... unless you speak openly with someone, a friend, who faces those racial issues, all you will be doing is learning the liberal academic perspective... anecdote is powerful

I'm not white, so I don't understand how I could have a white savior complex but thank you for your input.

Again, you having your little cultural expedition learning about other races to feel better about yourself won't do anything to actually advance poc. We face bigger problems like mass incarceration, higher chances of impoverishment and disease, and getting killed by the cops. Liberalism to you is a personality trait. For poc, it's the only way this country can change to let us live.

and top 20 includes Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bulgaria, Croatia and Slovenia which are all more or less poor and/or war torn countries... still seems like America continues to make well on its promise
