Gender and Major perceptions?

by: weird question

Is it true that majors like engineering, CS, physics and finance/stat are considered masculine and "alpha" at Penn?
While majors like psych, HSOC, english, etc. are considered feminine and "classy" ?
Do people sort of look at you weird here if you are doing something outside of your gender norm? Im Co2024

ok but can you please answer my question... i kinda just wanna know if its seen as weird at Penn if your in a major outside of gender norm, engineering is definitely a male heavy major which is why i included it... btw pretty sure nerds can be masculine lol like idk neil armstrong or jeff bezos ?

i guess i never really cared until my older sisters started suggesting that i consider a more "masculine" major... i was thinking psych and anthro double ... i've never been a hardcore stem guy and got pretty blindsided by what they were saying considering they've known me for so long lol... i guess im just overthinking

quick to defend someone call the majors nerdy but when someone says feminine you run away from it? Thats messed up. I'm not sure what would qualify a major as feminine but even so that is not a bad thing.

Although I don’t know what dilemma you’re in frankly (This sort of thing never mattered to me personally) I can empathize with you about the older sisters thing. I can see why their words are bothering you, older sisters can be harsh, I know trust me lol

@lmao i dont think there are serious issues of representation in STEM, women just don't choose to study engineering and quantitative science because of biological/behavioral reasons even when given the choice, inspirations and freedom to do so i.e. like at Penn?

this isn't the platform a meaningful debate in any way, but there's plenty of research out there to support the fact that societal expectations + cultural norms force women out of stem roles (or at least disincentive them to pursue those roles). it's sad that you're presumably a penn student and you have absolutely no critical thinking skills beyond "muh biology" when the vast majority of research today suggests that the neurological differences between the "male and female bran" are either nonexistent or wildly misattributed. but go off james damore!

im familiar with the paradox, it doesnt support anything you said tho?

countries with higher levels of gender equality have greater disparities than normal in STEM representation... so when its not professionally or culturally advantageous to pursue STEM anymore than other fields, women choose to not study STEM and do other things that they are passionate about, while men continue to follow their inherent passions in STEM-- that is the paradox and it does support what i said. Google "findings of Stoet and Geary Study 2018"

yeah i understand the paradox, still doesn't support what you're trying to say. also been a while since i've read it and this was the first thing i found after googling

"However, separate Harvard researchers were unable to recreate the data reported in the study, and in December 2019, a correction was issued to the original paper. The correction outlined that the authors had created a previously undisclosed and unvalidated method to measure "propensity" of women and men to attain a higher degree in STEM, as opposed to the originally claimed measurement of "women’s share of STEM degrees". However, even incorporating the newly disclosed method, the investigating researchers could not recreate all the results presented. A follow-up paper by the researchers who discovered the discrepancy found conceptual and empirical problems with the gender-equality paradox in STEM hypothesis.

of course a Dr. Sarah Richardson of the GenderSci lab in Gender and wOmeN's Studies dept wont be able to recreate the results... in science, one biased contradiction is barely even the bare minimum to disprove a theory

if anything it would win you like artsy points. but even that’s not gonna happen tbh. at the end of the day it’s your major and honestly i’ve forgotten what a few of my best friends r even majoring in

Any stem major would take a Wharton kids job. Wharton is the best out of any business school but stem is always better than business

I’m in Wharton and CIS and I always joke that Wharton is an MBA program that covers the cost of Huntsman hall and other fancy buildings by opening up to clueless 18year olds who’ve seen Wolf of Wall Street

^yes makes sense but IB is a good way to make a lot of money though you can also make a lot of money if your an engineer or scientist who has a successful innovation-to-market execution

Just do what you like. It’s not that deep. You don’t even have to tell people socially what you’re majoring in if it’s a big deal. If anything girls that do engineering get more respect because it’s hard for them to balance the courses and still be social. And if you’re a guy as long as you’re normal no one will care what you study.

By: seriously?
by: NoAug 21, 2020 9:03:16 PM

that almost is a blatant lie because girls choose men on financial and reputation aspects so unless your going to be like one of the best professors in liberal arts or be a successful writer (both of which no one can predict) women subconsciously choose men in STEM (including finance and medicine)... women tend to have way more freedom in their choice of study
