Tips for Freshman Starting at Penn!
by: Your mentorHi Class of 2024! I know this transition to Penn must be daunting for you. I thought sharing some important tips would help you start your freshman year as confident and prepared as possible. #1: bring your highschool gear to Penn (especially your varsity jacket if you have one). During that first semester there are so many students from all over the country and world. Wearing your varsity jacket or any other high school apparel is a great conversation starter and a way to identify yourself within the Penn community. #2: if you’re a Wharton student, don’t make the mistake of dressing inappropriately to class. I’ve been there... I wore jeans once by accident and it was ridiculously embarrassing. You’re expected to wear a tie to class every day (suits preferred). If it’s a College class, you can use a backpack, but if it’s a Wharton class, you’re expected to bring a briefcase. If your classes are online, I’d expect wearing a suit and tie each session to be all the more important. #3: in the winter, thrift a jacket locally. Penn is not status or wealth oriented so wearing a jacket like a Canada Goose will marginalize you. It will make you look insensitive, shallow, and superficial. You will have a hard time keeping friends. Thrift a jacket to avoid coming across as callous and so your peers actually respect you (this is also the only way to get into the top tier sororities and fraternities). I hope this all helps!

Hi! I'm pretty sure this is targetted towards guys. I happen to be an incoming Wharton girl, so should I just wear business casual? is there ever a time I could show up to class in sweats and hoodies...haha. Also the briefcase thing!! What is a good alternative for the ladies? Would you say a shoulder bag is appropriate? Thanks for the advice :)

Thank you so much! I needed something like this where I can get an inside scoop of what's actually going on.
Just one question, it seems like in general Penn settings, it's not good to show your wealth, but should I wear by Canada Goose parka or Moncler vest to the Wharton classes since it seems to be a more business casual setting?
And should I hide the Canada Goose or Moncler when I'm in a College class or walking down Locust, and only where it once I enter my Wharton class? Thank you again!

Hi! I can already tell you’re going to fit in at Penn :) Finding a jacket on the street would be such a great way to immerse yourself in the community. This is just a rumor so don’t quote me on it, but I heard the fraternities and sororities give you one extra point during recruitment for each hole you have in your jacket. Especially Theos, Theta, Castle, and Tridelt. You’ll be a shoe in
