is being in a fraternity freshman year a bad idea?

I know this is a very broad question, but if I'm not a super rich guy, and I'm coming to this school next year, is it tough to juggle being in a fraternity with all of the costs and time that is needed for it? I'm getting mixed opinions saying that joining a frat freshman year might distract me from what I actually am going to college for vs. the incredible social skills and involvement you gain from it.

Being in a frat is the most fun during the freshman and sophomore years and dies down once you become an upperclassman. Just my opinion
