good-bye sororities

by: Greek Alum

It is easy to predict that within the next ten or perhaps fifteen years, we will see the demise of social sororities.Sororities outlived their purpose which was for women to encourage and support other women hoping to pursue careers outside of the home, decades ago.Today, young women joining sororities are worse for it. In a society today that values diversity and despises elitism, sororities are an abject fail. In the last few decades, sororities began supporting particular philanthropic causes and organizations to redeem themselves and appear relevant within the college and local community. This attempt to appear to be a positive influence for good fails miserably because the young women who join the sororities really do not care about these causes and organizations and participate only because they are forced upon penalty of being fined or losing privileges. The perception that sororities are essential for getting ahead socially and in a career through networking really only works for men in fraternities. Unlike men, today's women are too cut-throat and competitive with each other to really bond in a sisterhood as evidenced by the comments on this website. Gentle women no longer dwell within the realm of a social sorority and with few exceptions, only "mean girls" inhabit the Houses. Sororities will not continue, for our culture and society will not tolerate their behavior for long. Sororities are no longer relevant; the large financial expense alone, is just not worth it.

Thanks for you endorsement. Regardless of the surface import of your words, it's obvious that you think sororities will continue to be relevant because you spent soooo much time writing about them. Good luck with your consciousness-raising writing. You're going to need it since you seem to have feelings contrary to what you write.

A thousand girls go through every fall hoping to get in one. Money isn't an issue for many soooo... I also think you are forgetting the incredible networking that is developed within the Greek community. It isn't just making a couple of hundred contacts in your house but all the other people you meet in other houses. It is essential in business to be able to have contacts and established relationships to get ahead.

It is funny to see the girls responding to the post in hopes to justify there immature and hatful behavior on this website. She hit the nail on the head. You are all self serving the sincerity of actions is lacking. If you were sincere you all would be supportive and positive.

To ummm... Made my point. You just cannot face the reality of your anonymous poor choices. By the way. I never said I was not interested. I thought the original post was very insightful.

And you just proved her point but you are too daft to grasp that you did so.

Crazy talk. If you're not interested in sororities you won't be on this site.

Why would you be here if you weren't interested in sororities?

Maybe it is an alumni who has an interest in their school's Greek system. Why do you have to be so in your face with people when you do not agree or like to hear what they say? If girls have to come on here and argue the rank of their sororities then the reason they join is self serving. The lady is right.
