Everyone keeps saying keep an open mind. Is that code for “be ok with AOP or AGD?”

Where's the actual receipts on this? It's not published anywhere. You personally 'just know'?

by: Yep

You don’t need the actual data from Panhellenic to recognize pref patterns and know what most of your friends and their friends preffed.

A lot of people pref some combination of KKG, XO, Tri Delt, Pi Phi, Theta, AXO, and A Phi.

AXO and A Phi are often preffed as a backup with a top 5.

girls that like these houses are pretty superficial and inr=terested in in trying to get into a certain house, not interested in finding the right house for themselves

Being ok with whatever house you get means that you went to all the parties you were invited to and each day chose the ones you liked best. If that is AGD or AOP, for heaven's sake have the backbone to choose that house rather than be persuaded by the ignorant idiot alums on this site who are trying to manipulate you into choosing a house they like best. All the houses offer the same kind of sisterhood experience, so choose one that you like the best. There isn't really any "top house" or "top houses." They're all good and all filled with 300 of every kind of girl you can imagine. If you can't find your people in any house, it's a YOU problem, not a problem with the house.

I strongly disagree with this. Most PNMs don’t have the opportunity to choose the house they liked best, and many don’t even have the opportunity to choose a house that they liked.

Recruitment is a numbers game and great girls fall through the cracks all the time because they didn’t have the connections or bubbly outgoing personalities that get you on the top of the bid lists and are essential to having a “good” recruitment. Being cut by a house that didn’t get to know you in recruitment doesn’t mean that you wouldn’t fit in there or that you’re in denial about the fact that you don’t belong.

No PNM should be pressured into accepting a bid from a house she doesn’t want to be in.

As someone who went through it, if you’re not happy with the houses left on your schedule at pref night and truly do not want to join either one, DROP and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty for it.

If you’re an introvert without prior connections and you get dropped by the houses where all of your friends go and where you felt you would fit in, I would strongly encourage you to go through again as a sophomore. You will likely have a much better experience because you will have friends who know the real you and will be pulling for you. It happened to me as a freshman, and on my second time going through I preffed two “top houses” and got a bid from my first choice.

Yes! Do not let anyone make you feel guilty for saying "no" to a house that you don't want to join. This is supposed to be a mutual selection process and if the houses on your schedule at pref are not houses you would have selected, DROP and don't feel guilty for it.

I would rather wait a year and try to join a house where I really clicked than settle for a house where I didn't. And unless they're just bidding anyone who stuck around so they can make quota, they will appreciate that a PNM who knew they were not a fit declined the bid instead of taking the spot of someone who really genuinely loved them and wanted to be there.

Hold on a just a minute...Everyone invited to a pref is on that sorority's bid list. It is the last round for a sorority to have dropped any pnm's they don't see as a sister. If you are asked to pref you are wanted in that house.

The other thing that needs saying is that pref is very often a game changer for some girls who were ready to drop. They see the sisterhood and find something they want to be a part of. And most importantly at pref, they see the other PNM's there who are their potential new member class. This is the make or break part of your sorority experience. These are the girls you are going to be closest with for the next few years and possibly the rest of your life. You may feel so-so about the house but if you love the other pnm's, that's worth some more consideration on your part. That's also a way to choose between your pref houses if you can't decide, you need to consider the other pnm's who are there with you for this reason.

If you miss pref you are missing one final opportunity that you won't ever get back. If you only like one pref house then you are free to suicide and see if you get that bid. If you don't find a connection at all after pref then don't sign your card. DO NOT SIGN YOUR CARD AND THEN DECLINE A BID; YOUR SIGNATURE BINDS YOU FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR TO NO OTHER BID.

I agree you should NOT drop out if you are on the fence or at all open to a house left on your schedule. But I do think this is valid if both houses you are invited to for pref have been your bottom two all week. You can be grateful for their interest but also know it’s not a fit, and that’s okay. If I knew I did not want to join either house, I would not want to lead them on or have someone talk me into making an emotional decision that wasn’t true to what I had been feeling all week.

Girls don't "fall through the cracks." If you don't have a bubbly personality or the right connections, YOU DON'T BELONG IN A HOUSE THAT IS LOOKING FOR THOSE THINGS. If you don't have top grades, YOU DON'T BELONG IN A HOUSE THAT"S LOOKING FOR TOP GRADES. If all you have to offer is looks, for goodness sakes, go to a house that is recruiting you for looks, don't drop out of recruitment because you think you can get Kappa or Tri Delta or Theta next time around. Go with A Phi now. They're your people.

Great girls DO fall through the cracks ALL THE TIME. First impressions and 5-10 minutes of conversation don't allow houses to get to know a girl well enough to know how she would fit in. My first impression of the sister who went on to become my maid of honor and my child's godmother was not a good one. Thank God I didn't have someone telling me that because she didn't make a good first impression she didn't fit in with my friend group or sisters. If a house is only looking for one quality that can be determined within 5 minutes, they're doing it wrong.

Someone is fooling herself. It's true that you need to fit into the house. They won't make an exception for a girl who isn't bubbly or academic, or a partier, etc. They look for a certain type and if you're not it, you'll be miserable in a house that values girls who are a certain type. That's why the whole thing about top houses is stupid.

Thinking back to the girls on my floor last year, we did not have any of these combos. You’ll see top 5/bottom 3 pref combos on pref night all the time. we had four girls ISP (two got into their chosen house, two did not but got snap bids.) I know 2 got their top choice, two got their second choice (I can’t remember everyone, these are just girls I’m still close to) all that to say, I don’t think there are any common combos across the board, they really vary depending on the person. Also, it seems like so many girls dropped last year, but I never saw any real numbers. It’ll be interesting to see if that holds true again this year!
