pi phi rush

by:

So I'm an incoming freshman, class of '18 woo boomer!
But I was just wondering, how hard would it be to pledge pi beta phi in the fall? I'm not a legacy, but I am good friends with a junior in that sorority and I can get a few solid rec letters, one of which is from a former pi phi at OU! Do I stand any chance?

There's really no way to know if you actually "stand a chance" to get into any sorority. However, knowing someone definitely helps, having a good GPA and a lot of high school involvement will help, and you will definitely need those rec letters!
However, your goal going into recruitment should NOT be to get into Pi Phi. It's a competitive week and really the best option is to just keep your mind open. I know it's tough, but the girls who were accepting of the houses who invited them back, even if they weren't their top choices, were the happiest.
There's a place for every girl in some house, you just have to find it. Keep your mind open and have a positive attitude!
Good luck!

I agree with the girl above it's very competitive. Bottom line the answer is maybe. One girl can't get you into a house but one girl can keep you out no matter which school's recruitment you go through. You need recs or you will Definately get cut and that goes for every house at OU. The hardest houses to get into at OU are Theta, Kappa, Tridelt, ChiO and PiPhi- no particular order there-- these are the houses everyone wants and like you everyone has their heart set on one of these " top5". Unfortunately as a result those houses have to cut more girls more quickly so the PNMs can be realistic about their choices. Deep cuts come every day from every one of those houses. You may receive a bid from pi phi about 80-85 girls usually do but if you multiply that number by 5 only 400-425 girls get a "top" house on bid day and usually 1100+ girls go through recruitment. So with numbers like those you can see every house has great girls to choose from and as a result all OU houses are strong. The houses are actually doing the majority of the selecting, PNMs just choose which houses they Prefer to go back too but they only go back to the houses that ask them back. The houses have roughly 300 girls so do the math if each girl in a house knew a PNM the house would still only get to chose less than a third of those girls and the number gets smaller because there are other great girls to choose from too. It's a numbers game. Most of the houses love most PNMs but they can't invite them all

On the topic of top houses, I would also like to point out that in the end, it doesn't actually matter if you end up in a "top house." Rush is really the only time it's a big deal to people. All the houses have philanthropies, events, rituals, date parties--- they're basically the same. People don't shun you if you aren't in the top tier, I promise. Most people don't even know there's a difference. Go into recruitment with a positive attitude and an open mind and you will definitely find the right place for you. Everyone hates when Rho Gammas and Jill Tran say "the system works," but it really does. All the houses are looking for something very specific in their pledge classes, and even if you "know" you want to be a Pi Phi, for example, chances are you just know the name of it more than you actually know what kind of girls are in the house.
It'll work out for the best. Good luck!

Wow this was actually really helpful! Definitely going in with an open mind to all of them, I'm so excited to get to know all the girls! Thanks so much :-)

Does it matter if the rec letters are from an OU alumni or can they be from anywhere? For example, my mom's co-worker was a DDD in Kansas.

If the alum is still really active with the OU chapter it will probably help but only if said alum knows you really well. Try to get ladies that know you well to right your recs. on a side note, the houses here get along really great regardless of some of the stuff you might read on this site. Get to know us not anonymous comments that could be coming from anywhere! Good Luck!

Yes. It is better to have a rec from someone who really knows you than a more generic letter from someone who's writing them for all the girls from your school.

They can be from an alumni anywhere, but it definitely helps if they're from OU. However, most of mine were from other universities. It's best if it's someone who knows you well and is a good family friend, but even if they don't know you as well, all rec letters will be helpful. Make sure they're coming from someone who thinks highly of you, though!
