sorority rush - let's be honest
by: OU Mom
You've been accepted to OU and now what? Roommates, dorm choices, majors, sorority/fraternity? This post is really designed for those girls coming to OU from out of town and without a connection to any sororities.
If you are not familiar with rush at OU let me tell you the things that Panhellinic won't tell you. OU has an amazing greek system, but you can't go into rush blindly. So let's be honest. Here are some things you need to know.
If you don't have any connection to the school or sororities, it will be very hard for you. With 1300 girls going through rush last year and only 11 sororities the odds are that you are not going to make it very far. Pledge classes are large, yet most house take 60 - 100 girls. You do the math. You will probably be dropped by half the houses the first round. OUCH.
They say that recs aren't important, but if you are coming from far away and want to be noticed have strong recs. And if you are a legacy but not at OU, then know that it may or may not help. Plenty of legacies are dropped, but use everything you can to get noticed.
Look nice and put your best face forward. Try to connect with as many people as you can. Be memorable in a good way.
Just in case you don't get asked back by any houses or realize that the last 2 that asked you back are not for you, make a back up plan for the rest of the week before everyone else moves in. It's a long few days if you have no one there and everyone else around you has pledged a house.

I went through recruitment 2 years ago and I was from oos along with two friends. None of us had any ties to OU greeklife. We all had great grades and were involved in a lot of activities including community service. We all pledged 3 different sororities and all 3 are considered top houses here at OU. Also on pref night we each visited 2 of the top houses. So it can be scary but it can have a great and positive outcome. My friends and I each received bids from our top choice house and had a great bid day! Good Luck!

OU mom is probably giving out a story that she heard, but it is far from typical. A little more than half the houses are more exclusive, but they all have girls from oos. One of my pledge sisters is from California and she didn't know anyone. I agree about the recs, though. They are necessary regardless of what panhellenic says. I get somewhat irritated though when people say that if the last two houses aren't for you blah blah blah. Girls drop out of recruitment because they don't have the self confidence to think they can make what they want of a house. No house has a bad reputation, some are just considered more hard to get into. A girl from my high school got her last choice which is the house usually considered the bottom house. She stuck with it, they did U sing and she's having a blast. She's met really wonderful girls and is completely happy. So if you get dropped by your favorites, I'd say get a new favorite, adjust your attitude and start enjoying life as a SOONER!

Great thread! I think all this information is helpful! And I want to be clear that this is not based on what I heard, it is truly something that I experienced and realized that I needed something like this before my daughter went through rush. She is in a great house and is so happy, but rush was really difficult. Several girls in her hall were dropped or dropped and then because they were out of state, had no where to go and nothing to do until the next weekend when the students of OU showed up for their move in. It can be a very long week if you don't get in a house. I felt bad for these girls, and there were quite a few. Some of these girls lived in Texas, so they were able to go home, but for girls from far away, it wasn't possible.
So...take the advice of the girls on this thread. If you like a house, let them know. Connect with the girls that are taking you through rush. Consider the houses that are asking you back even if they are not your "top" choice. Make friends with your group that you are going around with and make friends with the girls in your dorm. Sororities offer you life long friendships and a home away from home. Good luck and boomer sooner!

My daughter is African American but growing up most of her friends were not she has been accepted at OU and wants to go through rush, I'm concerned that this will not be a good experience for her. she excellent grades, and strong recs but I'm still concern. Do blacks pledge non-black sororities at OU?

Often the " lower" houses have more opportunity to take on leadership positions too. A lot can change in 4 years. Be the confident girl who helps build the " lesser" house up. There is one house on the campus that was considered " lower" 4 years ago and they're about to give the " top houses" a run for their money. All the houses are great at OU and all have a lot in common and have similar activities and every house has every type girl. Give the house that WANTS you a chance, you might just find you LOVE it!
