Actual rush advice I wish I knew
by: a friend
Hey friends! I came into the Greek system as a first generation greek and rush was v overwhelming so here’s what I wish I knew and what will help you and active members.
When you are walking in the house, make sure your name tag is visible. It helps make sure the girl who is supposed to talk to you gets to talk to you.
Door songs: yes they are real. Don’t freak out. There will likely be an intro/outtro song for each house at least rounds 1&2. As tempting as it is to start taking notes immediately after you leave the house so you remember, stay and watch them with your full attention. They literally are not relevant and don’t chose a house bc you like their song, but it’s considered rude to not watch the whole thing with all your attention, and I did not know that.
Bring water, oil blotting sheets and makeup to touch up, an umbrella, a snack, and shoes to walk between houses in your bag.
For philanthropy round, there are going to be houses that have you do activities that are related to their philanthropy. (Using the only example I can think of that isn’t the house I am in) AGD has you pack a meal for meals on wheels and write a note to go in it If I remember correctly. Yeah it’s a lil awkward trying to hold a convo and doing stuff, but the more normal you treat it, the better it goes. Have an idea of what you’d write before going into any house.
For round two, google each house’s philanthropy before entering and try to think of a way you personally can connect or empathize.
If you have questions, leave them below. No judgement. Myself and other active members can help. Please keep this a ranking free, Panhellenic-friendly zone.

Best advice , don’t listen to the girls in your walking group or hallway who act they know everything and you hear them say judgements after every house. I had this one girl in my walking group act like that, every time she came out of a house she would say something negative and would talk about ranks and there’s always gonna be that one girl, but to keep it in perspective that girl ended up getting dropped from almost every house. So don’t listen ! Definitely something I wish I knew

My big in high school cheer promised (I guess) that she'd get me into her house. I had kind of a negative opinion of the other houses because I had kind of idealized the house I KNEW I was going to be in. Instead, they cut me on sisterhood day and took another girl from our cheer squad but not me. I was devastated and considered dropping out of recruitment. My rho g talked me into staying and I'm so glad I did. I am so happy in a house that I was completely negative about at first. Just goes to show that the houses figure out where you'll fit even though it doesn't seem like it.

This post is everything!
I also had this idea of what I wanted to be but once in recruitment, I realized I actually didn't like the house I was so sure about going in. I fell in love with a house day 1 and ended up picking them and they picked me and I have met the greatest friends ever...lifelong friends who will be in my wedding!
I know girls who are fixated on a stupid rank and then ended up getting one of those houses and are miserable. Don't listen to others and don't look at ranks or listen to ranks! They are usually wrong anyway!

Best advice is to modify your expectations. If you get dropped from a house you like, don't get all depressed and assume you just don't belong in greek life. Instead, just realize that there are hundreds of girls that could be in any house and our new member classes are less than one hundred. So girls are going to get released. If you understand that you will have a wonderful greek experience with any house, you'll be able to rank every day according to what you like, not what greekrank tells you to like.

Good advice in this thread. And remember all our sororities are good at OU. It isn’t like other schools where there are failing chapters with low membership. EVERY CHAPTER AT OU IS GREAT. Maximize your options and be present in the parties that you get invited back to. Look for the good and don’t assume that one awkward girl you spoke to represents the whole chapter :)
