Houses and politics

by:

Hello

Can you tell me which houses lean more toward the progressive side? And which lean more toward the conservative side?

This is important to me and I cannot really tell from their instas.

There are both progressives and conservatives in each house. But if you only surround yourself with like minded people you will be one sided type of person. It’s healthy to hear other opinions. Just my two cents.

The person who posted above me is right, there are girls from either side in every house. That being said, there are some houses that lean a certain direction. Most conservative: Theta, Kappa, Tri Delt, and maybe Pi Phi. The rest are about the same. I think one of the “more progressive” houses took an LGBTQ member a couple of years ago, if I remember correctly! Hope that helps :)

Just to clarify. There is more than 1 LGBQT+ member in the OU Panhellenic. And have even had leaders that were LGBQT+

Every house has girls who identify lgbtq. Just because you don't know them doesn't mean they don't exist.

I think what the person meant, was that there was a girl that went through rush who was very openly LGBTQ. Yes there are LGBTQ members in every house, but most people don’t go through rush being incredibly open about it (which I think is a shame).

This is an example of the hatefulness you'll find in some of the sororities who always try to put down sororities that are more successful than they are. Pi Phis (and their moms) are not on here being hateful. I think you'll be able to figure out who is writing this garbage by looking at the two or three houses that get called out for trying to make themselves look more successful than they are.

If you knew how condescending and pretentious this sounds...and only reinforces a general stigma already in place you'd have thought twice before committing thoughts to screen.

I don't know what you consider to be benchmarks of success (I could guess) but I'll offer mine: how one chooses to conduct oneself in everyday interactions with others -- in business, in family, in social groups -- this is the true measure of accomplishment.

And I'll just leave that right there.

Honestly, I wish I had known how liberal my house was before I joined. Sometimes I feel like I have a "woke" agenda forced on me. I think OP is smart to at least be looking for like minded sisters before joining.

By: Sooner

I feel the same. I keep quiet about it so I don’t offend anyone but at times it’s all I can do to keep quiet. It’s something I would have considered more when choosing a house if I knew how into it many girls are. It makes me feel out of place tbh.

I know several girls who are afraid to speak up because they don't want to be labeled as anti-whatever. Since we cannot speak up, we have to go along with whatever cancel-culture plan they want to put into action, no matter how much we disagree with it or how much it makes us uncomfortable.

Instead of cowering away and feeling uncomfortable and out of place, I would suggest acting like a college student and telling your sisters what you believe and why. I think you'll probably find plenty of girls that will educate you on the other side and give you evidence of why your Fox and Newsmax views go against the evidence. If you're stupid enough to believe it because Hannity said so, then nothing can help you and you'd better quit college before you have to demonstrate critical thinking in class.

This is a valid question so don't let anyone shame you! The houses mentioned do trend to trend more conservative, but there are women on both ends of the spectrum in every house and even more who could are apolitical. You'll find your people!

Pan Exec and Student Life have totally taken over and pushed an incredibly liberal agenda onto all the houses. If you disagree with anything you're labeled as a bigot, so conservative women are forced to stay quiet (which is the opposite of the "diversity" they say they are so invested in). Be careful, but stand up for yourself and your beliefs. But be warned that many houses (at least their executive boards) have gone full-blown leftist.

Exactly right. I love my church but I wouldn't want to have all the rules of the whole greek system exactly like my church. It wouldn't be bad for me, but just think how it would be if all the rules were according to the Amish religion or like the conservative Baptists that can't drink or dance. So I get what you're saying.

That’s a pretty narrow
& one-sided look of First Amendment Constitutional rights. (Maybe too many brain cells being used up by critical thinking? Just a thought.)

There are 5 guaranteed freedoms afforded to US citizens through the First Amendment of the Constitution: speech, religion, press, assembly, and the right to petition the government.

Here’s the actual language contained therein: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” – The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The freedom of religion right goes both ways. Yes, the government must not impose a state religion on the public but it also cannot place restrictions on anyone’s right to worship or practice their faith as their conscience dictates.
This is why students anywhere in the US have the right to pray in public schools as long as there’s no disruption to school operations and no government employees (teachers/administrators) are involved.

So as much as some would like to deny a sorority women’s right to practice her faith as she sees fit on campus, they cannot.
First Amendment freedoms are for ALL OF US — no matter what the cancel-culture proponents would like to change or alter to fit their cause.

I don't have problems with people having opinions. Like favorite color, whether you like cilantro, or whether you like football. I do have a problem with people who don't think our greek system should be open to girls of color or girls who are not straight. I have a problem with girls who think lesbians are against their religion so they have to call them out and discriminate against them. I have no problem with girls who say they wouldn't marry a person of the same gender because of their religion, but I do have a problem with legislators who say that because it's against their religion NO ONE should marry someone of a different gender. That's not an opinion, that prejudice.

If everyone is seen as an individual with inalienable rights given by our Creator (just as our founding documents make clear) then we don’t have any disagreements on either side of the divide. Sorry, the criterion of viability won’t cut it. Tell me your feelings toward the senile elderly person rendered incompetent by a stroke? The mentally impaired or the quadriplegic war veteran? I guess they’re not “viable” given they are incapable of an independent existence in your eyes. Are you a eugenicist?

From the moment a law deprives a category of human being — the most innocent at that — of legal protection, the rule of law becomes threatened at its very foundations.

And here’s something of which you may not be fully aware: the US Supreme Court is not the final arbiter of what is wrong and what isn’t.

I realize greek message boards aren’t the place for this discussion but your post had to be countered.

Nope. FTR I’m not part of the leftist cancel culture that arbitrarily denies individual freedom of expression. I’m for allowing statements and authors the right to be evaluated on their own merits regardless of whether I agree or disagree with what is being said. (A novel concept for some today.) It’s not MY place to “cancel” anyone. The First Amendment stands supreme even though many leftists would like to cancel that too for standing in their way. (Pretty obvious this site is monitored by someone in some official capacity somewhere and they made the call btw. Your beef is with them.)

There are unfortunately a lot of girls who don’t feel supported by Panhellenic because they are conservative even though there are probably more of them than you would guess. When Panhellenic gets political and posts about liberal ideas without representation of conservative women it is a problem (check their insta stories). I suggest you look to find a group that treats you with kindness and hope that the leadership of Panhellenic makes an attempt to stop making our sisterhood organizations political.

By: Facts
by: It’s sad

When Panhellenic makes political posts they don’t represent us all.

Panhellenic is endorsing political movements/ideologies which claim to be apolitical but actually ostracize conservative women. If a conservative women says “ I might disagree with you certain things but we can work together on creating a better world for women to live in. “ They are still ostracized from political movements like feminism. Feminism today has become something exclusive to mostly white, liberal women.
So when Panhellenic and the sororities constantly talk about the modern feminism movement and nothing else, it is frustrating to those of us who are trying to communicate with and understand the other side, but are still told our efforts are not welcome because of a different viewpoint. No movement is perfect and there should always be room for accountability, correction, and open dialogue.

So you're against modern feminism? Do you know why the whole sorority system was established? It was to give women the same kind of support system that men had in college with their fraternities. That's the basic premise of feminism -- give women the same opportunities as men. Why would you object?

by: My 2 Cents

I am 100% for equal opportunity. I agree with the type of feminist movements that advocated for a women’s right to vote, divorce, equal opportunity...etc. So there is no need to put words in my mouth or lecture me on the type of feminism that was common when many sororities were founded. When I say modern feminism I am referring to the feminism of today. The feminism of today is really only “empowering” or positive to mostly white, liberal women and if you don’t agree 100% with their opinions you’re ostracized by them. It is clear that moderate, independent, conservative...etc women and their viewpoints are not welcome in the mainstream feminism of today. Maybe they’ll be tolerated if they sit down and shut up. This lack and disregard of dialogue is very frustrating. You can’t ostracize a group from a movement (because the movement won’t have open dialogue) then criticize that same group for not being feminist. It’s ridiculous and illogical. If you believe that the feminist movement of today is worth being apart of, then it is worth taking an objective look at. Taking an objective look and evaluating true and thoughtful criticism is the only way you better any movement or organization. I believe if we revaluated modern feminism it could be a fabulous resource for women that the movement isn’t currently reaching. Sadly, I don’t believe that will happen. If it does, that is a feminism I will gladly support and be apart of.

As I have said before, I agree with women’s rights, equality...etc. That is what modern day feminism claims to stand for. My main issue is the way that the movement acts. The canceling, the clear lack of dialogue and communication, the labeling etc.... An example of this is your name in the past post “@anti-feminist above” I am not anti women’s rights or anything like that. My critiques don’t come from a place of rudeness. Your quick reaction to label someone who disagrees with you illustrates the lack of communication that has lead to the ostracizing of conservative women and any opinion that is not mainstream in the feminist movement today. These issues are why it is frustrating for women who don’t fall into the feminist mold, to see Panhellenic constantly endorsing feminism.
Again, many women would love to be apart of a movement that celebrates Womanhood despite our differences. Feminism is not that movement for the reasons listed above. If you truly believe feminism is a movement that still has good left to do, open dialogue and criticism are a must.

Do you realize you didn't exactly answer her question? What do you not agree with? What do you think has been "canceled?" What is there a lack of dialog about? That's all I can see that you're against, but you're so vague that it seems like you're just being critical of her without any reason. I've got to tell you that when I see any woman who is against feminism, I think of the Handmaids Tale and that she's under the thumb of some man who controls her. By not providing any insight on why you're against "the movement" you leave yourself open to being called "anti-feminist." And you do sound like you're an older lady. Nothing wrong with that (except to wonder why you're on this site). I don't know any girls my age that are against the feminist movement.

By: @above

by: My 2 Cents

I apologize for being vague. I am speaking from my personal experience and the experience of many other conservative women who I know and see online. The reason I dislike feminism is that they ostracize and cancel moderates who disagree with them. Look at the movement, there is a reason why it is mostly white liberal woman. In my opinion, a movement like that needs to have people from both sides of the political spectrum and from all walks of life. I just don’t see that happening with feminism. There is no need to be over dramatic and compare a moderate criticism of feminism to the religious abuse and control of women that is prevalent in The Handmaid’s Tail. Also, I am college age. If someone makes a good point their age shouldn’t matter. You claim to not know anyone our age who isn’t a feminist. Well you probably do, many of us don’t want to speak out for fear of being canceled. You should take a step out of your bubble and respectfully listen to the opposition. That is how you better yourself and your worldview, even if you don’t end up changing your viewpoint.
