changing values... why even commit?
by: BS boomer sooner
Changing values? Traditionally, the decision to join a greek house inclueded the appeal of having a "family" that has your back. Sisterhood and brotherhood was based on loyalty and accepting- and embracing your legacies is part of that tradition. It keeps the chapter strong over the long haul.
I am hearing of multiple situations where legacies were cut in various OU houses this year. The advantage and incentive of joining (besides party invitations) is the long term network of connections built by loyalty to the same organization and to the shared character and values in which it was founded. That generally includes welcoming your sons and daughters years from now if they should choose to follow your footsteps. If it is now acceptable to dismiss the legacies during rush, what is the incentive to commit yourself? I'm guessing if this key character trait is missing, the long term networking value and loyalty of the house is weak as well. While parties may provide some short-term entertainment, ultimately that kind of bond is superficial and not be worth the commitment. I would just make sure your house matches your values and make sure it's worthy of your time. If you don't find that in a house, being an independent may afford you some extra time to find true friends with similar values. If your already in a house, strengthen your bond and yourr name by honoring your commitment.... Or you could offer a disclaimer to those that want more.

Every woman in a sorority knows all legacies can't be placed in their respective house. Not every legacy fits in every chapter of the sorority. PNMs must find a house they love and are comfortable in and it may not be their legacy house. Many times there are too many legacies going through recruitment and a chapter can't take all their legacies. There may be legacies that don't fit in with the girls in a particular chapter. Top houses with good return rates have a legacy issue regardless of which sorority it is or which university it is. All PNMs are afforded the best opportunity available to match with the sorority that fits them best, regardless of legacy status. All sorority women are aware of this issue. Each of the 26 Panhellenic sororities deal with this situation every year. All sororities encourage their alumnus and legacies to be pro Greek. Whoever write this original discussion should be more pro Panhellenic. If anyone one is upset with their own sorority about their legacy issues then the member can give their pin back and resign. A member of another sorority that weighs in on a different sorority also needs to understand their opinion doesn't mean anything.
Every sorority in the national Panhellenic conference has legacy issues.

I totally agree with the poster. I do understand that all legacies cannot receive bids from their respective houses, but perhaps it's time for all national offices to reconsider chapter and sitting sister policies. Granted, the PNM who is cut by her mother or sister's house ultimately pledges a house where she truly belongs, cutting her will always make the house and chapter look bad, something I don't believe any national organization wants. It's in each chapter's control. We'll see who is big enough to take the first step. I'm not holding my breath though.

This is the most ridiculous thread ever. It doesn't make a house look bad. They follow their national guidelines. This is a manufactured concern so that the original poster can bash Theta some more. Sh
