does each house have the same number of members?

by:

Does each house have around the same number of members? My grandmother said some are big in size and some are small. Is there a place to look to see the approximate number of members in each sorority? Thanks.

All the houses made quota last year except one. If they all make quota, they're all the same number except for girls dropping out (more in the lower houses). In the top houses there are more girls who graduate early, go to the HSC for classes, study abroad, etc. You'll read on here that taking additional members through COB or spring recruitment is bad. But most houses will lose 1 - 7 or 8 members per year. Some houses are allowed only one recruitment per year. Other houses are allowed to spring recruit if allowed. Last year all but two houses took members outside of fall recruitment. That keeps the houses about the same size.

"In the top houses there are more girls who graduate early, go to the HSC for classes, study abroad, etc."

That's just wrong and mean. There isn't a difference in the number of girls per house who do these things. There is no magic in your so called "top house" perception that has more girls graduating early, pursuing health science degrees, or studying abroad.

Does this mean the girls drop out after accepting a bid? What is the reason for more dropping out of the lower houses?

Thanks!

During formal recruitment all the houses can take the same quota. Quota is arrived at by taking the number of girls at pref and dividing by number of houses. OU does NOT cross cut. Sometimes a girl will not be high enough on either house she attended on pref night. If that happens her first choice will be offered to take her as a quota addition IF the second house is at quota. However some of the houses can actually be above house total. This happens because all houses are allowed to take quota during formal recruitment. For example a house might have 230 members going into formal recruitment, house total might be 300 but because all houses can take quota the house could still take whatever the number is for quota say 82. That would then put the house over 300. Houses like that can not do COB or spring recruit.

Thanks for the information. Can you tell me what this means?

"OU does NOT cross cut."

'Cross Cut' is what used to happen before NPC started allowing Quota Additions. It used to be that when Bid Matching happened after Pref, as soon as a house reached Quota, that was it, they were done, they could not take any more New Members period. This meant that a pnm could go all the way through pref and still not get a bid because the order she ranked her houses mismatched with the houses' ranks of her, so she was 'Cross Cut'. Quota Additions ensure that every pnm is guaranteed a Bid even when it puts a house over Quota, as long as the pnm ranks each of her pref houses; those who SIP or 'suicide' cannot be a Quota Addition.

Is 300 the maximum number of members per house?

There is no max number of members. There is “total” which is the mean number of members of all the groups about the 2nd week of classes each semester. If they are above the mean they can not recruit outside of formal recruitment. So there are always 5 or 6 groups accepting new members for COB/Spring Rush. But they can’t take more than total. So the number of girls recruited will be different for each group.

So during formal recruitment there is no max for a single group. The number of girls attending pref divided by 11 is quota. All groups can take up to quota. (Quota additions can happen to make sure all girls who attend pref get a bid)

Any you should realize that the difference between the numbers of the top house and the bottom house is maybe 10 - 15 girls. It's not huge.

On the grade info from spring 2019, I see a difference of over 100 members between High and low counts.

Not accurate. You can't tell the accurate numbers from the community grade reports.
