strappy dresses?

by:

Hi, my daughter and I have shopped a lot, and she has found some strappy dresses that she likes. In the example pics, I see only 2 dresses with straps, on pref night only. The dresses she likes are not low cut or short, her chest is covered but her collarbone and shoulders are exposed. Based on your experiences, would these dresses be appropriate or should we stay closer to the examples? Thanks in advance for your input!

That sounds totally fine! Tons of girls wear straps dresses! As long as it’s classy, you should be fine!

Yes that is totally fine! As long as she is covered, showing shoulders is fine!

For sure!! I don’t know what the example pics look like this year but last year girls deviated from the recommendations quite a bit. Girls wore fun skirts/ shorts and even some pants on open house. Anything that made their personality and style show really is what went. I saw a lot of cute rompers and jumpsuits on philanthropy day along with dresses. Many girls wore sun dresses or nicer rompers/ jumpsuits for sisterhood and then think of pref night as something worn to a wedding. Really anything goes as long as she feels good in it. And I can not stress enough HOW IMPORTANT comfortable/ easy to take on/ off shoes are. A LOT of running from house to house in a short amount of time and she will be miserable in uncomfy shoes. So opt for the comfy shoes and thank me later. My feet felt like they were about to fall off after rush even in comfy shoes and I don’t know how many girls I saw hobbling around with blisters from their uncomfy shoes or running up the streets barefoot because they couldn’t handle it anymore. Modest is hottest but don’t think your outfits need to follow like a high school dress code. A little skin won’t hurt as long as everything that needs to be covered is! But most important accessory is confidence and being yourself. What matters most is the girl inside the clothes!! Good luck to her and I hope she has a great rush experience!!

Those dresses sound fine. Just make sure she knows that the purpose is to make sure she finds outfits that are flattering to her individual figure. The guidelines are meant to let the girls know that they don't need to wear revealing or hard to deal with clothes. I saw they recommend no rompers. The reason is that if you need to go to the bathroom during a party (it happens a lot) a romper takes a lot of time to get out of and back in. Strapless dresses that don't fit perfectly might encourage a lot of angst as girls try to keep pulling them up so they don't show too much. We'd rather have girls able to concentrate on getting to know our members.
