informal recruitment (cob)?

by:

I don't care about house rank, but can anyone tell me how continuous open bidding works? I can't make formal recruitment because of other circumstances and I don't really know anyone currently in the house but I also really want to join a sorority :-( I have good involvement and good grades but I've heard that COB is almost nonexistent at OU... would it be better for me just to rush next year or take my shot at this? any advice would be appreciated thank you :-) I just want to be a part of a sisterhood!

I can't tell you much about COB, but I do know that not every sorority participates. Top houses won't participate in informal recruitment. If I were you I may wait until next fall so that you have a shot at all 11 houses and can meet some girls this year to help you next. If you don't care about that then by all means you may as well participate in informal, but if you'd rather get the whole experience you may just wanna wait.

Thank you! Are you in a sorority? I just wasn't really sure what to do but that helped!

All the houses are allowed to take quota( number of girls attending pref night divided by number of houses) regardless of current membership. As a result some houses go over the number of members allowed for house total. Only during formal recruitment can a house go over house total as a result of taking quota. Any house still below house total can COB. Example house total is 450 house A has 400 girls and formal recruitment total is 84. House A will then have a membership of 484 and will not be allowed to COB. House B has a membership of 340 and takes quota during formal recruitment(84). House B now has a house total of 424. House B is still under allowed house total. House B can COB if they chose too, The numbers are merely an example not actual OU numbers.

Most of the houses are about the same number at least within a few girls (except for one house). So first semester usually only the one house can do COB. Second semester is different. House total is the average of all the houses so half are above and half below but usually only by a few girls. If a house that's above total has several girls graduate early, move, get into nursing school, etc., they might end up a few under total. You might think that they get to spring recruit but not necessarily. For example my house was under total but we didn't spring recruit because our nationals prohibits it. Which I'm glad about because it would be a hassle. Other houses in our position did spring recruit because their nationals require them to if they're even one under total. For COB and spring recruitment, though, usually only girls the house already knows they want are taken. Like best friends of members. So it's not easy to get a bid to most houses during spring recruitment or COB. Btw, some top houses do spring recruit but none COB in fall.

There will always be 5-6 houses each semester who can do COR if the want (or if their nationals let them). Total is set at median membership numbers. (There is math involved)

I would not wait for next year or semester. Your options may be the same anyway. Why waste time you could be bonding with your sisters? And you can be part of the same PC as most of your friends.

The Panhellenic will have sign up for informal / COR. Because some groups have more limited spots it doesn't hurt to ask friends who are in or who join a sorority. They will know by week 2 of school if their group is participating. But do both for the best chances.

Good luck!
