cob and spring rush
by: CuriousWhich would be better for a soph to do? Are their more options in spring? I'm a semester behind so still have a lot to offer to chaps but think soph standing will knock me out for any bids.

It depends on you. If you have great friends in a house you want, you have a chance at getting a bid if they are below total. If you don't know anyone, you should look around and find a house you like and if you can get a bid (cob) take it. If you don't, wait til spring and see if any house you like is looking for members. Neither option is a lock.

As you get to know girls from sororities do let them know that you're interested in joining a sorority and ask them to let you know if their house is doing cob or spring recruitment. Most houses that do take only a very few girls and they're always ones they already know. Good luck! I hope you find a home with sisters you love!

There is not much difference between COB and Spring Rush. Total is determined at the start of each semester based on median chapter size. Translated this means normally 5 groups can recruit if they are allowed by their own HQ and/or want to. A group can have 1 spot or 20 spots depending on how far from total they are. The Panhellenic at OU helps out by letting PNMs register and distributing the PNMs information to the groups under total. This is a great service for PNMs who haven't made friends in the sororities yet. But a sorority can choose to fill those spots with girls they already know. It makes sense, Why spend time and effort recruiting when you already know a great girl or two to fill those few spots?
If you know girls in a sorority AND you they think they might have a spot in Spring, then maybe roll the dice and wait for Spring. But I don't think you would be here asking the question if that was the case.
So IMHO I would not wait until Spring. Register for informal recruitment. Get that extra semester of time with your future sisters. Be part of the fall PC. There is no guarantee you will get a bid either way. OU has a strong panhellenic community. Every sorority took 80+ girls this fall. But it is worth the chance. Being greek is better than being GDI.
Good Luck!
PS. If you don't have connections in any of the sororities, informal rush can sometimes work out better. I know a few smart, beautiful girls with great personalities who were dropped from all groups before pref during formal recruitment, they just slipped through the cracks. During informal you get a much better opportunity to get to know the girls, and for them to get to know you. So in some cases (not all cases) informal can work in your favor.

The truth is that all types of houses have done cob and spring recruitment. But the thing is that mostly it's completely quiet. You really need to know the girls in the house you're interested in. That's true for formal as a sophomore too. Let your friends know you'd like to be their sister!

What does house rank have to do with anything? She's looking for sisters, not for social status. She might already have the self esteem you joined a sorority to find.
