when did you start preparing for rush?

by: Curious

When did you start preparing for rush and what resources did you use? I've heard that there are consultants and even high school elective classes around sorority rush, is that true? Were your parents greek and what role did they play in your rush prep, and did you grow up wanting to be greek (or a specific sorority)?

Full disclosure: I'm not from ole miss or the south. I'm an alum from a small liberal arts college in the north that has a strong greek system for the campus, but a VEERRRRYY different rush process. I'm asking these questions mainly out of curiosity about the different cultures around rush. I may also post the same questions on the Bama board.

Don't listen to the troll who has taken over this site today.

Most of us girls decide in high school that we want to rush, many times when we see older girls posting their bid day and sorority photos on social media. For the most part, our moms were in sororities and we at least had a clue what sororities were when we were growing up.

If you're from the south you start lining up recommendations at the beginning of your senior year. By March we have all our packets assembled and are ready to send them out.

Some high schools offer rush prep electives, others of us attend some sort of Panhellenic luncheons or fashion shows or events in our hometown usually second semester senior year.

Senior pictures are a big deal because those are the photos we use in our packets. Good photographers are aware of "sorority" photos.

Resumes are prepared highlighting our grades and activities. Some of us hire professionals to help write these resumes and put together our packets.

We nurture any and all connections with active's or alumni all year long in an effort to stay in their minds and remain relevant to them.

Thanks for sharing. I don't know why but I find this so interesting.

At my school, rush was held second semester of Freshman year. Most people came to school knowing whether or not they want to rush, but not knowing much about each house, unless of course you had a friend or older sister in a sorority. But in general, most girls didn't really start thinking about it until you went through informal rush in the fall. Recs aren't required or needed, and you could go into rush knowing no one and still get a bid from any house on campus - the only time rush lists were basically set well in advance was if a house had to do a rush in the fall to bring up numbers. The most important thing that people seemed to worry about first semester of freshman year was grades - I remember when finals rolled around first semester, some girls stressing because they knew that they needed to do well to make the 3.0 requirement to rush. The rush process itself feels intense while you are in it, from both a PNM and active side, but again, it's an entirely different world.

That said, my mother went to Ole Miss, but did not rush and was not greek. She was very happy that when both me and my sister rushed that we landed in houses with southern roots and a strong southern presence, even though we were on northern campuses - I remember my sister trying to decide between one house and DG, and my mom pushing DG all the way because it was founded in the South.

You write like a 40 year old. And seriously what high school has a rush prep elective? Literally none.

I don't know who fed you that bs about Oxford High School... they absolutely do NOT have a rush prep elective. Dumbest comment ever. Honestly "rush" is the last thing the OHS administration or school board cares about.

I'm a senior this year from Oxford. I rushed four years ago. I absolutely had a rush prep elective. Maybe they don't offer it anymore, but they sure as heck used to!
