? for alumni

by: Abcdef

How has being in your sorority impacted your life post - college, how did you use the connections?

And, if you don't mind my asking, where do you live? Are you still in MS, the South, or somewhere else?

I'm in grad school, not in MS. In a different region of the country.

I'll probably use the alumni network of my grad school for networking...no offense, it's just a better network to work.

I don't think that sorority connections matter or mean much in terms of a professional life. But I have loved all the alumnae of my sorority I've met in different parts of the country where I've lived. They're so wonderful.

I've made a alumnae friends through my sorority's alumnae chapter. But that's just for social stuff.

Oh totally forgot to mention because this was obvious to me but I made my best friends in college through my sorority and we're still best friends.

I made many life long friends that I know I will stay in touch with for the rest of my life. I live in the Dallas area now. I agree that sorority connections or which one you were in does not make any difference in the professional world. Like no really one cares and there are rarely any opportunities where a sorority connection gives you an advantage. The best use of sorority connections is for volunteering and social events, like my bf and I meet up with the local alumna group for tail gating and brunch. That's also the only time I ever wear my letters any more.

Sorority connections are mainly feeders for service groups like Junior League and arts/cultural orgs (like the local ballet/museum/symphony/opera committee).

I joined a sorority for the benefits it provided me in college. Once graduating, it's not so important. All this talk about joining a sorority because of its "strong" alumni base is silly. Only women I know that actually attend the alumni functions are those that have social issues and can't find friends outside a bunch of hens.

Oh my... This is entirely untrue. I have a great group of friends, some that I have made very recently, that are not a part of my sorority. I also have great friends that are in my local alumnae club. They aren't my "go to" friends but I do enjoy hanging out with them. My alumnae club has about 400 members in it, but only about 80 of those ladies want to be involved.

Maybe that's your experience in your organization, but mine is totally different. I got in contact with my current local alumnae chapter right before I moved clear across the country, and they were there for me without my even asking them to be. Helping me find an apartment, asking if I needed any help with moving or anything. It showed me a spirit of sisterhood I didn't expect.

Since college I have moved out of state to Florida for my dream job. In my alumni group- there are ladies from all across the country who have had different types of college experiences than mine and it has been a good way to network through work ( some are in my field of work) or who to call for a good doctor, plumber etc. it has been one of many ways to meet people when you don't know anyone in a new town- and I have volunteered some with the local college chapter

I would also like to hear from the guys how being in a fraternity helped post-college. Is it any different?

I went to a very small school with just a few sororities. I rushed to help meet people. I am still best friends with quite a few of my fellow members and still keep up with over 30 others. I moved to Oxford and was really reluctant to join the alumni group here. I wasn't sure how Ole Miss dominated they were. I did join, and yes most are Ole Miss alums, but they welcomed me with open arms and I have quite a few more best friends. It was really great to know that all alumni are super supportive of each other.
