go away, alumni

by: Reb

You heard me. We would have a much healthier and vibrant Greek community here if it wasn't for the alums sticking their noses in our business and trying to control us. Alumni at every other school move on after they graduate and limit their involvement to homecoming, alum volunteering and the occasional special event. Why can't it be like that here? Please quit trying to relive your glory days at Ole Miss and get a life. Thank you.

You don't learn any leadership skills with alums doing everything.

I could not agree more. It is not a good feeling that all of our chapter's major decisions get overruled by the alumnae who micro manage us like crazy. I know they are doing it because they are protective of our sorority and put in a lot of time and money but there is a big difference between "Advising" and "Bossing"... they are not leading or guiding us.

The worst part is that if anyone disagrees, they get branded as a "troublemaker" among the alums which I'm told holds harsh consequences after you graduate.

To be fair, my friends in other sororities say it's the same with their alums so I think maybe this is just part of the Ole Miss Greek culture?

What does nationals say about this level of alumni "involvement" (aka bored housewives)?

Well, it's almost feels like our Nationals (my Chapter is very similar to those described above, so it seems like a lot of us are in the same boat) actually wants the alums to be super involved, for several reasons. One is obviously the substantial financial support they give to the Chapter. The other is that Southern chapters in general (of every sorority) are considered to be VERY important to Nationals because Greek life in the South is so big and prestigious. Therefore, they want to be very strong in the South and have thriving Southern chapters. They don't think we, as actives, are capable of making the best or right decisions for our Chapter, so they encourage the alums to make them for us. At least that's impression my Chapter has gotten, and it's really upsetting.
