what make top tier better?

by:

I am in a so called middle tier sorority and really am curious about what makes the top houses better? My sorority house is beautiful, sisterhood is great, we have awesome swaps, and the house is filled with all kinds of girls.I have friends in just about every house and can feel no difference when I am hanging out with my friends in the top houses and in the bottom ones. They all seem happy in their houses. So would someone tell me what makes the top houses better?

I actually think this is a very good question! I would encourage people to answer in a way that is not insulting to anyone. It would be nice to hear some intelligent responses....
I am not at this school, but differences in top and mid would be grades, reps, pnms who want "top" houses, awards and honestly---mostly it's those that are traditionally known as "top." Honestly, if you didn't know the "set" tiers, most people could tell just by meeting all the houses who was a top vs mid......

nothing really. the "top" houses have been here longer, and have a strong Mississippi presence. Girls grow up dreaming of being a Chi O or a Tri Delt because that's what their mothers and grandmothers were. Ole Miss is a school deeply rooted in tradition, and when you have families where 20 members have gone to school here, they're all going to follow in their footsteps when it comes to Greek life. These houses are more desirable to those who are from MS and because they make up such a large portion of the student body, they turn project the notion that these are the best houses. Really, the tier system is about who you know. Top tier= you know lots of actives and alum. Middle= you know mostly actives, maybe a few alum. Bottom= generally don't know anyone, often the way OOS girls go bottom tier because they don't know anyone

it's also true that top tier houses have the best grades and they tend to win events like Derby Days and Theta Encore and they have "best" social calendar, but really things like social events are more subjective... who you think is the best frat, etc.

response I've ever read to this topic. MS kids grow up with their whole life to get into a certain sorority or frat house. That's why they spend so much time on this site defending themselves. With all the OOS students pouring in they're afraid they'll lose the status they have heaped upon themselves. It's just a Mississippi thing that OOS folks can't understand.

No, that's not true. I'm from oos (Texas) and I am in a top tier house. I didn't grow up with Greek parents and didn't dream of being only in a top tier house. I knew the ranking going into rush. Everybody knows the rankings and reputation of each sorority. And no, hardly anyone reads this site. I'm the only one from my entire friend group and even knows about this site.

I clicked with actives from all three top houses before rush even started. To me, those were the houses I wanted based on how they treated me. End of story.

From the outside looking in, yes, the top houses look more desirable. I guess the best way to describe it would be how I viewed the cheerleaders and dance team members when I was in high school. They were just more popular and seemed to have the most going for them. Silly, I know, but true. An 18 year old still lives by the rules of society on a quest for be with a popular group.

At least that is true of all the girls that crave the top tier.

If you are from Jackson or Memphis, and plan to stay in Jackson or Memphis after graduation, then DDD and XO would probably be considered better for you, especially if you want to be connected from a social and philanthropic standpoint (JL, etc).

However...

If you are from Michigan and want to move to San Francisco after you graduate, quite honestly, the Ole Miss tiers are somewhat meaningless in the traditional sense.

I don't say that to get other alumni all riled up, it's just a true statement.

When you graduate from College, you get to decide how active you choose to be with your Greek organization, and you have access/connections to an international network. Example: There is a DDD alumni chapter in San Francisco, and there is an AOPi alumnae chapter in San Francisco.

As for life on campus, what's important is to be at a house where you feel comfortable. If you can't see yourself hanging out watching tv, in your pajamas, with the girls in a certain house, then look elsewhere. Who wants to spend 4 years feeling uncomfortable or that you're constantly trying to find your place?

This idea that "everybody wants top tier" and only wants 2 or 3 out of 15 chapters on campus and everybody who doesn't get a bid from a top tier house is "settling" is completely stupid, not to mention, insulting. It's basically the same as saying that over 1000 girls can't think for themselves, be individuals, or be confident that their choices are right for them

Obviously you don't go to ole miss and quite frankly shouldn't be giving advice!

Ole miss has only 11 sororities on campus. Those sororities are huge!

I've been here three years now and have yet to be invited to a pajama party. At most 8 of us got together at someone's apartment for a wine night and watched a movie.

Less than 15% of girls will live in their sorority house and if those, less will watch tv together as a group.

Yes, chose a house that you can see yourself in, but realistically, you will end up hanging out with the same 30 girls your entire 4 years here.

Sororities are not as magical as some would like you to believe.

Join a sorority where you will get involved on campus, that will encourage you to make good grades, and be there to support you. Everything else is honestly just fluff.

Umm ,you are so right. Also, because rush is so late girls get really close to their floor and classmates who all get in different houses .These relationships can be so close that you end up with friends in all of the sororities . I'm not an ADPI ,but they are strong all over the south not just Tri Delt ,Chi O, and KD.

The mark of top-tier is not getting "hottest babes of TFM" pledge class -- maybe even back-to-back -- and still top-rushes are willing to kill for a bid the following year. Or having drama -- aka DDD -- and it being just a blip in the scheme of things. It may not be "fair". But its Greek life at OM. Deal with it.
