rushing as a northerner.
by: Out of StateIm attending Ole Miss next year and plan on rushing. My mom, grandmother, and aunts were all in sororities at SEC schools so I am a legacy. However, I am from the North. Does this mean sororities will automatically cut me because I am not from a neighboring southern state?

Hey! I'm a freshman who just rushed at Ole Miss, and got a bid to a "lower-mid" sorority. I know I've never been on the other side of rush yet, and so I am largely uninformed about the whole selection process, so I'm just going to tell you some things that I think will help you out.
-You said your mom/relatives went to SEC schools. Do they know anyone from here who has a connection to an active member? See if you can find an active to make a connection with. Ideally, she could invite you to come down for a spring party, where you could meet other actives. I didn't do this and I got a bid, but I know some girls who swear by this.
-GET REC LETTERS. I didn't know the proper way to go about getting rec letters, and I didn't get any from Ole Miss alums. I had one for each house, which Panhellenic says is fine. I would get two though, and I would try my hardest to get them from Ole Miss alums. If you have a local Rebel Club, try and contact them now. I would get on this ASAP, because it was so stressful for me during the summer to do this. Some people didn't come through, and so I was getting letters up until the very last deadline. I didn't start early enough, and this probably hurt me.
-Get off of this website. I read this site religiously throughout my senior year, the summer, and through rush. It was the worst thing I ever could have done. I got cut horribly for Skit (I went from 7 houses to 2), and reading negative things about the houses I had left made me so...

Northerner, we took down our state flag. So now we're all the same. We have no history or anything that distinguishes Ole Miss from Kansas or Maine or New Mexico. We are completely the same. Come on down, we'll grill up some brats and perhaps, if the weather holds, do some ice fishing. Nothing to be concerned about, Ole Miss rush is just like rush at SUNY Stonybrook! But we're not completely like all northerners, you'll need to no no your mustache.

unenthusiastic for the rest of rush. There's negative things about every chapter on here. If you stop reading it, you will be able to make your own decisions about which houses are right for you.
-If you're not a legacy to chapters here, it probably won't help you. Some houses are required to keep you up to a certain point, but being a legacy won't be a sure thing in any chapter here.
I was not a legacy. I had recs, from random people who did not go here. I had a 4.0, tons of extracurricular activates, leadership in high school, awards, you name it. I have a squeaky clean rep but I had 0 connections, which hurt me in "top" houses. Being cut by them hurt a lot, but I love my sisterhood so far, and I am so happy with the decision I made. You better believe I want to drop out of rush so badly after being cut, but I would have regretted it so much. I've started to make forever friends, and I truly hope you do too! Good luck with everything!!
