thoughts on new rush rules?

by: Active

What does everyone think of the ridiculous new rules Panhellenic sent out? I get these rules are to keep dirty rushing from occurring and to keep pnms from feeling "overwhelmed" but the rules are ridiculous.

I think they are ridiculous. I think PanHellenic needs to get over it. I'll even go a step further. I think the whole notion of girls rush is archaic and overrated. Please don't hammer me with comments of "why are you in a sorority if you feel this way" so on and so on. I'll tell you I love my sorority but hate most things that deal with Rush. I think it is so silly that young WOMEN of 18-22 are made to practice singing, clapping, and cheering such silliness and then do it over and over. Really, women do not pick a sorority due to who has the best "performance". If they do, do you really want that kind of a girl as a member???
It was interesting and somewhat fun my sophomore year but as a Jr. and Sr. I'm over it!!! and so are most of my friends.

Until you have been on the other side of rush, you have no idea how important these rules are.

The number one reason, beyond grades, that a girl will be cut from a sorority is because we believe she will be "happier in another house." How do we know whether or not she will be happier in another house? Easy, she is seen in the presence of actives from other sororities, or appears in social media pics with actives, or has actives comment on her pictures. If we believe there is a chance you will drop our sorority in favor of another, we will drop you first to make room for another girl who truly wants to be in our house!

As actives we know exactly what we are doing commenting and posting pictures of you! We are marking you and hoping other sororities will drop you! The more sorority actives who see you with us, the better our chances are of being your only choice. It's called dirty rushing for a reason!

Two years ago the same rules were in place, they changed them last year and I for one am happy to see them back!

She's right.

My sorority cut tons of girls last year that we knew had interests in other sororities.

I am on the other side of rush, hence the nickname "active." I think the rules are ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with inviting a pnm and her friends to dinner to get to know them better if you're not paying for their food, etc.

As for post #2 "honestly" she needs to work on her writing skills if she plans on being a future librarian. Does not articulate a clear thought process.

Oh sophomore! Just wait until after rush to say that you know what it is like on the other side of rush!

I'm a junior and I would never ruin my friends chances for a successful rush because i was selfish enough to let other sororities know she was ours. I would have no way of guaranteeing her a bid!

If you don't know the girls enough by now, you can wait until rush to get to know them better! Just like everyone else.

The rules are totally unenforceable. I can see all the Panhellenic nerds now...let's make this and this and this a rule. Get a life.

The fines are real! PNM's are not held accountable, but the actives sure are!

Trust me the judicial board is out there and can't wait to find violators! If a sorority can be fined for having a finger outside the door during a door stack, or fined for keeping a girl 2 seconds too long inside a house, then yes, if you are seen breaking the rules, you will be fined.

Some sororities pay over $30,000 in rush fines. My sorority passes these fines on to the girls who violate the rules.

Fines may be real but the new rules are so nit picking that they won't be inforced. I broke three today so kiss my ass Panhellenic !

Too bad everyone gets in trouble when some sororities blatantly disrespect the rules (like the pancake breakfast, bowling night, or 150 friend requests).

Who had a pancake breakfast or a bowling night? Events like these are exactly why the rules are needed!

I hate these rules but I also hate the fact that some girls go really overboard with dirty rushing. However, that's only a few girls from like 1 or 2 houses.

These rules stink because I have two girls here that I absolutely love (and yes I did know them before rush). I hate that I can't take them to Chic-Fil-A or invite them my family's Grove tent. I get that other sororities might drop them because they know they know me, but who cares? Good! Know that I love these girls! I want them! Back off!

PS These rules won't be hard to get around at all.

This is a problem, because you don't care if other sororities drop your friends, but you honestly have no way to guarantee them bids. You will have to wait on pins and needles everyday throughout rush with the rest of us actives to see if they got cut or not. Trust me, nobody is safe from cuts, even our good friends!
