dues

Hello All!
I have saved about $3000 to join a sorority

I am worried it may not be enough. I think I can make a bit more before rush week but what happens if a girl falls short on her dues?

Okay... so yes sororities here are expensive and some are even about $2000 + a semester. However, this is not to say that you can't talk to your chapter treasurer or something and work out a payment plan. Most sororities are more than willing to work with you if you commit to a payment plan. I know a lot of girls who do this and they are still able to join and enjoy greek like just like everyone else who pays all at once.

So what y'all are saying is, sororities are for the rich only. I feel so privileged to be rubbing elbows with girls who have the extra $25,000 lying around for dues while we're in college!

If you don't want to be surrounded by people like that, don't come to ole miss

You can't ever have everything you want. That's life. Deal with it. Or work your a s s off to pay for it if you think it's that important to you like lots of other people do.

You have to pay for everything you get in life. The original poster said she had $3,000 saved up, and would that be enough for her to afford a sorority. The response was without a plan to get more money for the first year and each and every year thereafter, no, and that is good advice.

Most of the Greeks at Ole Miss are from upper-middle-class families, some just plain old middle class, with a few truly rich kids thrown. It may seem like there are lots of rich kids because the cost of living and housing in Mississippi is low, and the cost of attending Ole Miss is low, and so there is more money to spend on luxuries. Some families have to struggle a bit to pay fraternity or sorority bills, but it's something they want, and so they pay for it. Other parents don't think it is important, and so they don't pay for it.

For an upper-middle-class family, $25,000 over four years simply isn't much money at all, particularly for a student attending an inexpensive school. So sororities are not for the rich only. They are for the rich and the upper middle class, who can just write a check, and the middle class, which has to budget for it and want it. But lower middle class and below will not be able to afford the bills, in all likelihood, and that's just life. It's a luxury.

Do you not realize that oos girls are typically 30x prettier and wealthier than miss girls? Please get over yourself, miss is one of the states with citizens in the most amount of debt. It's all for show with a good majority of you.

Jealous much? You must be one of the girls who feel like you entitled to a bid even though you got cut. Also, if Mississippi is such a horrible place maybe you should get out. It would be an improvement!

@Disgusting I sure hope you aren't one of my sisters! Your negative comment about allowing OOS and black/minority students into sororities is mind boggling to me; it's sad to realize people as ignorant as you are involved in our Greek system. Very shameful. As for allowing "poor people" to join...

Your comments about "finding the money or working for it" show you are delusional and have little grasp of the financial situations of the lower/middle class. While I think we can all agree that sorority dues shouldn't be subsidized for less wealthy members, is it that hard to welcome girls into a sorority who might have to be on a scholarship or payment plan or work a part-time job to pay her dues?

You need a reality check, because appalling comments like yours won't fly in the real world.

@Disgusting, you are honestly psychotic, do you not think its glaringly obvious that you downvoted my comments and upvoted yours a bunch of times? Do you have anything better to do? Lol.

You seem really insecure to have to brag about being accomplished and popular on Greekrank. Again, no one outside of this backwoods state would by any means consider you to be wealthy or "classy" and I bet your idea of being well-travelled is a two week tour of Europe in high school.

It's funny you have to try to defend yourself so hard though! And I don't know who you think I am, because I never said I had any trouble paying for MY sorority; quite the opposite, actually, I was simply calling you out for your ignorance.

Anyway, as fun as this has been, your comments show that you clearly don't have a grasp of logic or reading comprehension so bye, have fun being the most popular and successful girl in all of the grand state of Mississippi!

If you don't even have the money to afford a sorority, you should probably rethink coming to Ole miss. Between the Jackson money, the Dallas money, and the Buckhead/ATL money, you're going to feel very out of place when you can't afford a dress for a date party much less a Cartier bracelet like everyone else

Are fraternity dues similar to the amounts posted in this topic? I am assuming that fraternities probably cost more because they have more events (parties) and fewer members to pay for things. Is that right?

Fraternities are generally cheaper, but they do have "grocery" bills for the parties. Some fraternities don't have swaps they have to pay for so they're cheaper, I would say there's a wider range

Y'all keep saying that dues are 2000+ a semester. Does that include meals.? I know a meal plan for 15 meals a week would be about $1400 a semester so if that is included the sorority part isn't that high. I am not at Ole Miss but my little sister is thinking about going there. At my school my sorority bill each semester is about $2200 but that also includes $1350 for meals.

Have you considered another school that has Greek life but isn't so expensive. I go to UGA and live in the house with meals for around $4000 a semester which is much cheaper than off campus or dorms and regular meal plans. Out of house and no meal plan is $1100. My sister goes to Georgia southern (I guess a 2nd tier school in state) and lives in house too and her dues are about 2/3 what mine are. And my baby sister is rushing at Ole Miss or Mississippi State in the fall (why I'm on your site and our whole family is from MS and she doesn't want to see everyone she ran into high school) and I can't believe how expensive it is! I've heard M State is cheaper is and still has active Greek life. And DO NOT TAKE OUT A LOAN FOR THIS. Just food for thought and there is nothing wrong with asking your parents and working. Me and my 3 sisters have always worked on a schedule to "wants" based on grades. Everything from prom to cars to phones to sorority to spring break. All As mean I have to pay 10%, down to a 2.5 average meant 50%. And anything below that was 100 percent outside of pure needs.

There are other schools with much less expensive Greek life than ole miss! Also take into consideration that the meals and housing expenses will have to paid for whether you go Greek or not, so however you're paying for school (parents, loan, scholarship) that portion has likely already been accounted for. Most of the people on here are trying to make you feel bad and like you're poor but they probably only have that attitude because they're only just scrapping by themselves. It's awesome that at such a young age you feel like you should take on that responsibility yourself instead of feeling entitled to it by your parents! I felt very entitled most of my life and now I kinda feel like a selfish spoiled brat for being that way and spending so much of my parents money! Whether they can afford it or not none of us "deserve" k after k after k spent on us. Sorry people on here are so bitter, it's almost always due to jealousy.
