dues

Hello All!
I have saved about $3000 to join a sorority
I am worried it may not be enough. I think I can make a bit more before rush week but what happens if a girl falls short on her dues?

That MIGHT cover one full year of sorority dues... The first semester before initiation is always a bit more expensive due to an initiation fee. My sororities dues are a little under $2,000 PER SEMESTER. This does not include a meal plan which allows me to eat at the house and some t shirt fees. If a member fails to pay her dues, she will be put on probation and cannot attend social events put on by the sorority. I would not recommend pledging a sorority if you know you cannot pay it. You will be given an approximate amount of dues during rush for each house and the exact amount of dues after you pledge your house. You should drop if you can't pay it.

That might cover your dues. But it won't cover meals and house fees.
Every sorority is different, some are more expensive than others, but there would be no way to guarantee you receive a bid to a cheaper house.
Sororities are so much fun, but very expensive! I'm sure I've spent more than $3,000 on clothing and costumes and tshirts this year alone!

Email the Greek Office off the ole miss website and see if you can get a list of every sororities dues. Once you have that, budget in more for tshirts, swaps, and other things. If you cannot join a sorority due to monetary reasons, please do not join a sorority or go through rush. There is no doubt in my mind you are a great girl because you've worked hard to save up this money and have taken responsibility for it, but the truth is if you can't pay for it there are other great organizations on campus that would love the leadership potential you've already shown. If you rush and take a girls spot that could pay for it and also really wanted to do it and then you have to drop, you're not being fair to the girl that could have or the greek organization that now has to pay for you to their nationals for the rest of the year. Please please realistically and deeply look at the dues and really think about whether or not you can do it. If you can't rush freshman year, try to wait and save up for sophomore year!

Also, please don't try to discourage me from rush week because of money. I like to work for money and not ask my parents. HOWEVER, if the circumstance arises where my dues fall short, they could work something out so I can participate because they know I work hard for my grades, money, and all the several extra curricular activities I do.

Hi,
I want to go through recruitment next year, but I need to understand the costs a little better (for budgeting reasons). Is the $2000-$3000 per semester mentioned earlier only the dues? Or does that include parlor fees, too? And meals, tshirts, social fees are extra?
Thanks so much!

This is really sad. The additional thousands of dollars every semester for a sorority on top of other college costs is a serious expense. I with there was 'sorority financial aid' or a sliding scale payment system or something as I am sure there are a lot of great girls who want to join a sorority but may not be able to afford it. Sororities should not be only for the rich.
Also if anyone has tips on affording a sorority, they would be very much appreciated!

Greek life can tell you how much the dues are, but keep in mind that there are other fees as well. House fees, parlor fees, meals, badge, pins, initiation, new member fees, etc! Please don't look at just dues or you will never be able to afford a sorority!
Also, most sororities require a check immediately after bid day! If you do accept a bid, you better be prepared to bring your check book or pay online. Usually within the first week!
