dues

by:

Hello All!
I have saved about $3000 to join a sorority

I am worried it may not be enough. I think I can make a bit more before rush week but what happens if a girl falls short on her dues?

That MIGHT cover one full year of sorority dues... The first semester before initiation is always a bit more expensive due to an initiation fee. My sororities dues are a little under $2,000 PER SEMESTER. This does not include a meal plan which allows me to eat at the house and some t shirt fees. If a member fails to pay her dues, she will be put on probation and cannot attend social events put on by the sorority. I would not recommend pledging a sorority if you know you cannot pay it. You will be given an approximate amount of dues during rush for each house and the exact amount of dues after you pledge your house. You should drop if you can't pay it.

That might cover your dues. But it won't cover meals and house fees.

Every sorority is different, some are more expensive than others, but there would be no way to guarantee you receive a bid to a cheaper house.

Sororities are so much fun, but very expensive! I'm sure I've spent more than $3,000 on clothing and costumes and tshirts this year alone!

Email the Greek Office off the ole miss website and see if you can get a list of every sororities dues. Once you have that, budget in more for tshirts, swaps, and other things. If you cannot join a sorority due to monetary reasons, please do not join a sorority or go through rush. There is no doubt in my mind you are a great girl because you've worked hard to save up this money and have taken responsibility for it, but the truth is if you can't pay for it there are other great organizations on campus that would love the leadership potential you've already shown. If you rush and take a girls spot that could pay for it and also really wanted to do it and then you have to drop, you're not being fair to the girl that could have or the greek organization that now has to pay for you to their nationals for the rest of the year. Please please realistically and deeply look at the dues and really think about whether or not you can do it. If you can't rush freshman year, try to wait and save up for sophomore year!

Greek life can tell you how much the dues are, but keep in mind that there are other fees as well. House fees, parlor fees, meals, badge, pins, initiation, new member fees, etc! Please don't look at just dues or you will never be able to afford a sorority!

Also, most sororities require a check immediately after bid day! If you do accept a bid, you better be prepared to bring your check book or pay online. Usually within the first week!

Do you also have funds set aside for your sophomore, junior, and senior years too?

You'll spend closer to $4,000 each year.

I don't recommend this unless you absolutely have to...But you could take out some low interest loans

By: Loans
by: No.

Do NOT take out any loans for sorority expenses. That has got to be the most irresponsible thing I've ever seen on this site. Greek life is not worth 12-15k of debt, no matter how low the stupid interest rate.

Why not? I put some of my sorority expenses on low interest loans and am paying them off now. I'll have them paid off pretty soon. It turned out fine for me but I wasn't taking out any other loans.

To the poster above: how big of a loan did you need to get? I'm just looking for a ball park figure or even a range, not an exact number.

Also what was the prime on your loan and what type of institution did you secure the loan through?

i would like to hear the details of your loan as well. people say it's a bad idea but it would be nice to hear how you made it work.

You'll never hear anything about her fictitious loan, you think anyone is stupid enough to do that? First, a reputable bank would not issue a loan for 'sorority dues' so there's no way it's low interest. Second, private loans don't wait until after you graduate to repay them. The loan accrues interest and you have to start paying the balance off before you graduate, sometimes right away like a car loan.

She's just giving you really bad advice and trying to get you into financial trouble. Don't take out a loan for sorority expenses.

there's no way that girl actually took out a loan for her sorority expenses unless she's mentally retarded

I only took out loans for my sorority stuff senior year so that was one year's worth of dues and stuff. And OBVIOUSLY I didn't go to the bank and say that I wanted a loan for sorority dues. I my parents transferred my tuition $ to my bank account so I paid for my sorority that way, set aside some extra $, and took out a loan for what was outstanding on my tuition/books/living expenses/etc.

It was less than 10k and has been manageable to pay off with my job in the past few years, but whether that's true for you really depends on what field you're going into. I'm an engineer so I knew that would get me a good job out of college...I don't think I can say the same for a lot of other majors. And the amount of my loans was much less than many people graduate with.

Y'all can say I did a stupid thing, but I don't regret it but I also don't know that I'm the typical girl.

Thank you! Out of curiosity what was the prime rate on your loan and did you have to start repaying the loan right away?

I think I can come up with a $1000-2000 more. I just have to work more. I know the first year is much more expensive than the years after! I think it will all work out. If it all hits the fan, then I could make my parents help out!

Thanks everyone!

But $3,000 won't cut it. My dues are $2,200 per semester. That doesn't include the freshman meal plan I have to eat at the Union and at the sorority house. Then there's t shirt fees and an initiation fee. The first semester is the most expensive but not by much. I will continue to pay more than $4,000 per year for the next 3 years. Don't get me wrong, it's totally worth it. But be realistic. Working your a s s off to pay for a sorority... Is it worth it to you??

yes, it is and my parents would probably help me out a bit because they know it means a lot to me.
I'm used to working my a s s off.

That is my next question. I will be a sophomore transfer.
Do I still have to get the meal plan if I just eat at the Union?

Also, please don't try to discourage me from rush week because of money. I like to work for money and not ask my parents. HOWEVER, if the circumstance arises where my dues fall short, they could work something out so I can participate because they know I work hard for my grades, money, and all the several extra curricular activities I do.

Honestly, if your parents can't help you pay, it is going to be hard to afford a sorority. That is the harsh reality.

Hi,

I want to go through recruitment next year, but I need to understand the costs a little better (for budgeting reasons). Is the $2000-$3000 per semester mentioned earlier only the dues? Or does that include parlor fees, too? And meals, tshirts, social fees are extra?

Thanks so much!

This is really sad. The additional thousands of dollars every semester for a sorority on top of other college costs is a serious expense. I with there was 'sorority financial aid' or a sliding scale payment system or something as I am sure there are a lot of great girls who want to join a sorority but may not be able to afford it. Sororities should not be only for the rich.

Also if anyone has tips on affording a sorority, they would be very much appreciated!

by: Really?

Sliding scale and financial aid for sorority membership? You are not special. Work for it the same way lots of other people do. It's a privilege not a right. You're at college for an education. If you can't afford a sorority you need to be honest with yourself.

Mostly of my sisters come from wealthy families so most don't have your worries, but a few girls do work to pay their dues.

They miss out on so much and it seems so unfair, but that's life.

by: What!?

"That's life???" How about, we help deserving girls afford their sorority dues so they can enjoy the experience too. This shouldn't be only for the wealthy.

By: What!?

by: So just raise dues?

The only way to help deserving girls afford sorority dues would be to raise the dues on everyone else. Most of these girls aren't so wealthy that they would be able and eager to pay an extra $2,000 or so a year to subsidize the sorority experience for someone else.
