cost of being in a sorority
by: rushingfall2016I saw questions on here pertaining to cost to be in a sorority at Ole Miss. I don't have thousands of dollars to be in one, if I get a bid but I was wondering if sororities do fundraisers or anything to help with the cost, since most people are trying to cover books and tuition at school and such.

Going to be blunt with you so you don't get your hopes up.. Sororities do not help you pay your dues. They do not care. They want girls who can pay them and will ask the alumni writing your recs about your financial situation. Sorority dues typically cost 3,000-4,000 a year. That doesn't include meal plan for freshman, t shirts, and all the other stuff you need to "keep up" with the sorority girls at ole miss. Rush itself is expensive. You'll need to get your nails done, new dresses, etc. Greek life isn't for those with less money. That being said.. I do know of girls who take out loans to pay for their sorority.

I really hope there is a way to help you out. I honestly find it hard to believe that people are going to be that shallow about financial situations.Don't let people discourage you.
Please don't take out loans to be in a sorority. I read that is what some girls are doing. Unless you aren't taking out student loans but still.

If you're already having doubts about joining a sorority, please don't. It really hurts the chapter when they get those members on bid day and then the chapter goes through and budget for the upcoming year/spend all the money on new member gifts/initiation fees all to find out the girl couldn't pay and knew it all along. Sure, go to Greek Day if you've already registered, girls are required to tell you the costs of joining, and if they don't just ask. If you continue to go through rush just for bid day and know you have to drop it remember you've taken someone else's spot who really wanted to be there as well as could have paid and also hurt the chapter (thus 400+ girls next year) by making them cover your costs. Please don't rush as mean as it sounds, there are lots of other great opportunities.

No. You have to pay your dues yourself. Seriously, don't rush if you can't afford it. You'll be taking a girl's spot who can pay the dues and can have the time to be a part of the chapter.
I can't tell you how annoying it is to have a lot of girls drop their house because they weren't prepared to pay the dues. I don't mean to sound rude or mean, there are a lot of stuff to do on campus, but don't rush if you can't afford it.

I totally agree with what you are saying, but please don't encourage pnm's to take out loans to pay for their sorority!!!!! Student loans are bad enough when all you have to borrow is tuition, but adding sorority dues to your loan total is about the stupidest idea I've ever heard!
If you can't afford to join a sorority, find other clubs and organizations that you can afford! Greek life if not all there is to so on campus! Plenty of non-Greeks around campus who can testify that you don't have to go Greek to have an amazing college experience!
